James Howlett, more commonly referred to as Logan, is a formidable mutant with retractable adamantium claws and regenerative abilities operating under the alias Wolverine, who failed both his teammates, the X-Men, and his world, sending him into a depressive spiral. He was taken from his universe by Deadpool in the latter's attempt to replace his own reality's Wolverine, though the two were banished to the Void by Mr. Paradox's rogue faction of Time Variance Authority agents. Wolverine and Deadpool formed an initially very uneasy alliance to try and escape the Void, which they did with the aid of the Resistance. Now together as friends, the pair was able to stop Paradox's plan to destroy Deadpool's timeline and eliminate Cassandra Nova to save the entire Multiverse, eventually allowing Logan to come to better terms with his past mistakes and live peacefully in Wade Wilson's universe."Nature made me a freak. Man made me a weapon. And God made it last too long."

Logan (born James "Jimmy" Howlett), also referred as Wolverine, was a mutant with retractable forearm claws, enhanced physical attributes, and accelerated regenerative abilities. As the co-leader of the X-Men, he was also a famous hero and warrior, having fought in many wars throughout human history.
After leading the X-Men for many years and earning a legendary reputation, Logan became old and vulnerable due to the poisoning of his adamantium skeleton, resulting in his healing factor failing. While taking care of Charles Xavier with the help of Caliban, Logan found a daughter in Laura, causing Zander Rice and his men to pursue them, until they defeated them both, including his own clone, X-24, whom he was murdered by gruesomely. Accepting the fate that he always wanted, Wolverine died in peace from his wounds with Laura beside him.

Appearance[]
Personality[]
Logan appears to be the ultimate personification of manliness and masculinity. While he appears to be perpetually angry, he is a rather complicated man, due to his violent and mysterious past. He has very little patience for those around him, and this quality adds to his gruff demeanor and solo attitude. Indeed, Logan prefers to be alone due to him disliking and distrusting the company of others. Despite his disgruntled nature, he has a very dry sense of humor, constantly insulting others and giving them demeaning nicknames. Logan does not hesitate to harm or kill and seems not to harbor any true remorse or guilt over any violent actions he has done in the past, with the exception of Jean Grey in the erased timeline. His past has, in fact, emotionally scarred and forced him to make himself numb to the pain and suffering he has endured, from his childhood trauma to his several lifetimes as a soldier in many of the most violent wars in modern history. His is therefore less inclined to show mercy towards his opponents, anyone else that attacks him, or those who he thinks deserve it, such as when he tried to kill Noburo Mori since he was corrupt and took part in Mariko's kidnapping to be paid a fortune. Despite his willingness to use violence, he is still a moral person who does not do so needlessly, nor does he attack innocent people. While he is described as cynical and pessimistic, Logan is nonetheless a good person and will always stand up for those who can't defend themselves, or at the very least be willing to avenge them, as such as his killing of Agent Zero for attacking him and killing the elderly couple that sheltered him. While hiding in a well from the Nagasaki nuclear bombing, he was not fazed by the destruction going on outside since he could do nothing about it, but was still willing to save Ichirō Yashida when he had the chance to, unable to leave the man to die. However, when Yashida proved himself to be evil and repeatedly tried killing Logan to gain his healing as Silver Samurai, Logan tore the suit open, pulling the wires that kept Yashida alive, before stabbing his chest and dropped him off a cliff to his death in a rage. Logan has grown some restraint and perhaps mercy over the years presumably because of his prolonged exposure to the X-Men. Although he has no restraint or regret for unleashing his animal side on those deserving of such violence, he does not show cruelty to those who do not deserve it, for example, he shows mercy to the the Pentagon guards by non-lethally incapacitating them while attempting to free Magneto with Charles and Beast. Although officially an X-Man, Logan prefers to be alone. He has a deep distrust and an inherent lack of respect for people, regardless of whether they are both human and mutant, having seen nearly 200 years of violence, prejudice, and war. This attitude also stems from having people he trusted betray him, such as Kayla, and his brother, Victor. However, the true reason for Logan's wanting to be alone is due to the fact that so many people tend to die around him, such as friends and loved ones. He also shows signs of self loathing for the violent life he has lived and the pain he has endured. Logan is extremely loyal to and protective over the few who can gain his trust and respect. He is completely ready to sacrifice his life if it will save someone he loves, and will stop at nothing to protect his friends and family. Despite his blunt personality, Logan has made many friends with the X-Men, but most notably Rogue, becoming almost a father figure to her, after realizing that both of them are outcasts. His is also one of Xavier's most trusted allies, with Xavier even having a mentor role to Logan. He grew attached to Charles to the point of breaking down when he was disintegrated by Dark Phoenix. He is also greatly attached to Mariko Yashida, having found a chance of happiness with her, to the point of risking his life to defend her while his healing factor was disabled, fight an army of Black Clan ninjas, and even torture a member of the Yakuza to find her. Logan is a man of vice; he loves to drink alcohol and smoke cigars, knowing that neither can effect his health due to his powers. He is also an adamant motorcycle rider and has shown to have a hatred/fear of flying in planes. His most famous traits are his temper and attitude. Logan seems constantly angry and has a very short temper. Though he is capable of deep thought, he has said himself that he has an animalistic side to his personality. This side of him is feral and primal, causing him to become instinctual and go berserk, especially in combat. It is caused by his animalistic mutation and triggered by rage, fear, frustration, great annoyance, general distress, or pain. It results in him becoming highly aggressive and mindlessly brutal, similar to an animal, as he is prone to roar with rage in most of these cases. In some cases, it is this brute-like side of Logan that make it easy for him kill and harm without hesitation. After the events of 2029, having long since lost all of his loved ones (excluding Charles), combined with his gradually weakening body, Logan's outlook on life has become bleak at best. More hostile than ever, Logan cares little for helping others and seeks only to find a small measure of personal peace by becoming a drifter on the sea. With his healing powers so weak that he is no longer immune to toxins, he has taken solace in drinking. However, upon learning of his estranged biological daughter/clone, Laura, and a series of events that would help her, Wolverine ultimately regains his compassion and hope from years ago.
Synopsis[]
X-Men Franchise[]
X-Men Origins: Wolverine Prologue[]
James "Jimmy" Howlett was born on 1832 in what would later be known as the Northwest Territories of Canada. In 1845, James lies sick in his bed while Victor keeps him company. James' father arrives to check in on him before heading downstairs to settle a dispute with Victor's father, Thomas Logan. James hears a gunshot and runs down to see what has happened. His father had been shot by Thomas. It is under this grief-stricken incident that James' mutation begins to manifest, with bone claws slowly emerging from his knuckles. In a wild rage, he screams and impales Thomas with his new claws. However, just before he dies, Thomas reveals to James that he is his real father. James runs away after his mother Elizabeth is horrified by her son's mutation. As he is running, Victor catches up with him and vows that since they were brothers, they would look out for each other no matter what.
Over the next 120 years, James and Victor fought for the United States in numerous wars - including the American Civil War, World War I (on the Western Front), World War II (both participating in the D-Day Invasion), and the Vietnam War.
The Wolverine Prologue[]
Sometime during 1945, James transfers from the European front to the Pacific front, where he is captured by Japanese forces prior to August 9, and is sent to a POW camp near Nagasaki. During the Nagasaki bombing on August 9, 1945, James saves the life of Ichirō Yashida, a young officer in the Japanese Imperial Army. After saving his life, Yashida thanks him and offers a Japanese samurai sword as a token gratitude. James refuses, but says to hold onto it for him, promising to return for it in the future.
X-Men: First Class[]
In 1962, while traveling the world searching for mutants to fight the Hellfire Club, young Charles Xavier and Erik Lehnsherr come across James in a bar. They introduced themselves, but before they can continue, he dismisses them. So they leave him be and train and teach the mutants they have.
Original Timeline[]
X-Men: Days of Future Past[]
In 1973, Wolverine is hired to act as a bodyguard to a young woman but enters a sexual relationship with her against the rules. He is discovered the next morning.
X-Men Origins: Wolverine[]
During the Vietnam War, Victor attacks a young village girl. Soldiers from his platoon try to stop him, but he kills a senior officer. James reluctantly assists Victor, releasing his claws and prepares to defend his brother. For their grave insubordination, both James and Victor are placed in front of a firing squad to be executed.
They survive the execution due to their regenerative healing abilities, and are placed in a cell soon after. Several hours later, William Stryker enters their cell asks them to join a special team of mutants he put together - Team X. James and Victor agree to join.
During one of their missions, Team X arrives in Lagos, Nigeria and attacks a compound there. After defeating the compound's security forces, they obtain a mysterious rock - later discovered as adamantium, from the compound's leader and discover that it originates from a remote village. Upon arriving at the village, they are informed that the rock fell from the sky as a meteor. Stryker wants more information, and has Wade Wilson interrogate in his place because he speaks the language. After receiving no further answers, Stryker orders his team to attack the villagers. Logan, however, stops them before they can do so. After a brief argument with Victor, Logan quits the team and promptly leaves them, ignoring Victor's calling out to him.
Six years later, James (by now using his biological father's surname, Logan, as his given name) is living in western Canada, working as a lumberjack and living with a school teacher named Kayla. After many years of participating in warfare, Logan now desires a more quiet and tranquil life. One night, Kayla tells him a Native American folktale about the moon and her partner, whose name meant "Wolverine". Eventually, Stryker and Agent Zero find Logan at his job. Stryker asks Logan to rejoin him in order to stop Victor (who was murdering former members of Team X), but Logan rebuffs him and leaves in his car.
One day, while Logan is at work, Kayla is attacked by Victor. Sensing Victor's presence in the area, he rushes to Kayla's abandoned car, but finds that he is too late for any kind of rescue. Kayla is dead, and understands that this is Victor's doing.
That evening, he finds Victor in a bar and, in a state of rage, lunges at him. After a brutal fight, Victor snaps off Logan's bone claws on his left hand before leaving. The next morning, he wakes up in an emergency room, where Stryker happens to be present. Styker tells Logan he can help him exact revenge on Victor with an experimental procedure. Logan agrees to go through with it, but also warns that he is bent solely for revenge.
Prior to the adamantium procedure, Logan asks for new dog tags with the name "Wolverine" on them - a reference to the story Kayla told him. Stryker binds Logan's bones with adamantium, and he flat lines afterwards. After a few moments, though, he resuscitates and escapes the facility after overhearing Stryker order that his memories be erased for so that his DNA could be used for an upcoming project. Logan continues to flee until he finds a barn and hides in it.
The elderly couple who owns the barn offer him food and shelter. Although wary of him at first, they soon warm up to him, even giving Logan a jacket which belonged to their son and allowing him to take their motorcycle for a spin. However, just before offering him breakfast, Agent Zero kills the couple. The barn is bombed as Logan escapes on the bike. After a long and daring chase, he attacks Zero's helicopter and takes it down.
After killing Zero, Logan attempts to locate the two remaining members of Team X and finds John Wraith and Fred Dukes in Las Vegas. Intent on killing Victor in revenge for Kayla's death and Stryker for his betrayal, Logan tries to inquire Dukes about Stryker's activities. A misunderstanding ensues, leading to a boxing match between the two. Logan ends up beating Dukes and interrogates him until he is told about a mutant and former prisoner named Remy LeBeau, or as most people call him, Gambit.
Logan and Wraith find Gambit in New Orleans and asks him about Stryker's Island, where mutants are being held hostage for Stryker's new project, Weapon XI, Wilson, an old friend of Logan, has been captured, tortured and turned into a monster baked Weapon XI with the mouth fixed by Stryker who force him to obedy to him mind controlling Wilson's mind.
Gambit, believing that Logan wants to take him back to the Island, attacks him. Soon, Logan sees Wraith's dead body with Victor crouching next to it, collecting samples of Wraith's DNA. Enraged, Logan fights Victor and nearly kills him before Gambit interrupts, allowing Victor to escape. After defeating Gambit, Logan clarifies his intentions and convinces him to take him to the Island.
With Gambit's help, Logan arrives at the Island, which turns out to be Three Mile Island. There, he finds Stryker, who tells him about Weapon XI, and reveals that Kayla (present on the Island) wasn't really killed. She had at some point been recruited by Stryker for the purpose of seducing Logan and creating an incident where he was compelled to join the Weapon X program - in this case, her faked death. Eventually, Victor arrives and again engages in a clash with Logan. When Logan has the chance to decapitate him, Kayla talks him out of it and spares him.
Kayla informs Logan that her sister, Emma, is being held captive on the Island. She had only partnered with Stryker in order to secure her release, and assures him that their love was real. He agrees to help her and frees the other imprisoned mutants. After freeing them, he is stopped by Weapon XI - now controlled by Stryker. They clash as the other mutants flee. Logan climbs one of the nuclear reactor's cooling towers, with Weapon XI in pursuit. Just as Weapon XI is about to decapitate him, (at the command of Stryker), Victor shoves him off, explaining to Logan that the only reason he saved him was so he could kill him himself. They soon end up fighting Weapon XI together.
During the fight, Weapon XI's built-in optic blasts activate, threatening both Logan and Victor. Just before Weapon XI can kill Victor, Logan decapitates Weapon XI. He kicks him into the nuclear reactor, his head falling off as he tumbles below with his optic blasts still activated.
After helping Victor, Logan states that he wants nothing more to with him. Victor simply responds that, as brothers, they will always look out for each other, and jumps off the reactor. As the reactor starts to tumble, Logan follows, collapsing as he lands. Just before a piece of the reactor lands on Logan, Gambit saves him by breaking up the piece. Gambit and Logan then briefly split up, with Gambit going to help the children and Logan attending to Kayla. Logan carries her a few steps before Stryker shoots him in the back. In a feral rage, he turns and sprints at Stryker, eventually jumping after him.
As he is in mid-leap, Logan is shot in the head by Stryker with adamantium bullets, and falls to the ground, unconscious - damaging his brain and losing much of his long-term memory. Just as Stryker is about to kill Kayla, she grabs his ankle and, using her power, orders him to leave before dying. As Logan awakes, he has forgotten everything and everyone, including Gambit and Kayla. However, when he sees Kayla's corpse, he shuts her eyes. Gambit and Logan soon go separate ways.
In an added scene at the end of the movie, Wolverine is seen drinking at a bar in Japan. When the bartender asks if he is drinking to forget, Wolverine replies that he's actually drinking to remember.
X-Men[]
Years later, Logan is seen as a cigar-smoking loner who wanders from place-to-place in Canada. He participates in cage fights to make money, taking advantage of the enhanced durability that his adamantium skeleton and healing factor grant him.
Later in the bar hosting one of his cage fights, he is watched by Marie, now calling herself Rogue. It is here that she first sees Logan's retractable adamantium claws when the latter engages in a brawl. When he is about to leave in his truck, Rogue (who was secretly hitching a ride on Logan's trailer) introduces herself to him and asks if she can come along. At first he declines, but soon changes his mind and takes her with him.
On their way, his truck is attacked Sabretooth (a further mutated Victor Creed). Logan tries to battle with him, but is knocked out. Before Sabretooth can do any further damage, he is stopped and chased away by Cyclops and Storm, who rescue both Logan and Rogue and bring them to the X-Mansion.
When Dr. Jean Grey tries to treat Wolverine, he regains consciousness and immediately attempts to escape. He soon discovers that there are mutants like him there who are trying to control their unnatural abilities under the tutelage of Professor X. Xavier persuades Wolverine to stay with them and become part of the X-Men, as he could get an opportunity to learn more about his forgotten past. Wolverine reluctantly agrees and stays.
Later, Mystique, impersonating as Bobby Drake, tells Rogue to leave as "she is a danger to everybody else" because she had used Wolverine's regenerative healing powers to heal wounds he had unintentionally given her. This is actually a trick to lure Rogue out of the X-Mansion so that she could be used by Magneto to control a machine that could convert humans into mutants. When Wolverine finds out about Rogue's absence he persuades her to return to Xavier's school, but the pair are intercepted by Magneto, who kidnaps Rogue.
Wolverine, along with Jean, Cyclops and Storm, head to the Statue of Liberty, where Magneto is implementing his plan. In the process, Wolverine encounters Mystique and stabs her. He is also challenged by Sabretooth, and they both engage in a fight atop the Statue of Liberty. Cyclops intervenes and knocks Sabretooth off with an optic blast. Wolverine gets carried to the Statue's torch on wind created by Storm, frees Rogue from Magneto, and gives her his powers so she can heal. They return to the X-Mansion.
Xavier gives Wolverine a hint for the search of his past as promised, directing him to Alkali Lake in Canada. Wolverine then leaves the mansion on Cyclops' motorcycle heading to Alkali Lake.
X2: X-Men United: The Movie Prequel: Wolverine[]
Four days after leaving the X-Mansion, Logan reaches Alberta, Canada. During a gas stop to refuel the motorcycle, he encounters Sabretooth, who had been tracking him for days. The two soon engage in combat, and Logan quickly discovers that Sabretooth has a regenerative healing factor like himself.
After fighting for a while, the battle reaches a climax when both are doused in gasoline. Wolverine gambles that of the two, he would survive if set aflame. After igniting the gasoline, he proves to be correct, as Sabretooth writhes in pain. Wolverine then hurdles himself and Sabretooth into a nearby snow bank.
Just as Wolverine is about to kill his enemy, he notices a dog tag on Sabretooth that's very similar to his own. Questioning Sabretooth on the matter, the latter responds that he has always possessed it. In order to find further answers, Wolverine offers to buy Sabretooth a few drinks at a local bar.
At the bar, both Logan and Sabretooth share what they know about each other in order to shed light on their connected past. Through this conversation, Sabretooth states that his real name was Victor Creed, and that prior to five years ago, his memory was mostly blank (implying that like Logan, his memory was wiped), save for nightmares of things he did on missions (most likely Team X's various missions). Creed also states that the reason he worked for Magneto was that the latter promised to help in disclosing his past.
Before they can continue their conversation, HYDRA forces break into the bar and confront the two mutants. Although their original intention was to apprehend Creed, the soldiers quickly refocus their efforts on both men.
Logan and Victor work together to fend off the attacking HYDRA, which prompts Victor to state that their fighting side-by-side seemed familiar to him (a recollection of their numerous shared experiences in various wars). Unfortunately, Creed is soon heavily tranquilized, and Logan is rendered unconscious through the use of a sonic disrupter. Once unconscious, they are ordered to be taken to an undisclosed covert ops base run by William Stryker.
A while later, both wake up in the cargo-hold of an aircraft en route to the base. As Logan attempts to escape by ripping through the fuselage, Creed grabs his neck and threatens to throw him off the plane. Although claiming that Logan doesn't deserve to learn about his past, Logan himself suspects that Creed is saving him - something that Creed doesn't necessarily deny. However, Creed then rationalizes that what he is doing is payback for the incident on Liberty Island. Just as HYDRA soldiers confront the mutants, Creed disposes of Logan, the latter crashing into a frozen river.
Logan survives the crash, and eventually makes his way back to the motorcycle to continue his journey to Alkali Lake.
X2: X-Men United[]
Logan finally arrives at Alkali Lake, only to find an old and deserted facility, giving him no clues about his forgotten past. Disappointed, he returns to the X-Mansion.
Upon returning, he is given the responsibility to look after the mutant students in the mansion in Professor X's absence, who plans to visit Magneto in his "plastic prison" with Cyclops to discover what he knows regarding the recent attack on the President. Jean Grey and Storm also leave in search of Nightcrawler, who was found guilty of attacking the President. While the Professor interrogates Magneto, he learns that Magneto had leaked all the information about the X-Mansion and Cerebro to Stryker. Professor X and Cyclops are soon kidnapped by Stryker's forces.
Back in the X-Mansion, at night, Logan has nightmares of his involvement in the Weapon X program, and decides to walk around the mansion, where he starts chatting with Iceman. All of a sudden, Stryker, along with his combat force - HYDRA, invades the mansion and starts to look for Cerebro. Wolverine takes out many of the soldiers and saves the students. He instructs Colossus, Iceman, Rogue, and Pyro to leave. As Wolverine is about to escape with them, he is confronted by Stryker, whose presence provokes more forgotten memories in his mind. However, he shakes out of it and leaves with the remaining X-Men in a car for Boston to Bobby's house. Meanwhile, Stryker finds Cerebro and steals important components to it so he can construct his own version.
When Storm, Jean Grey, and Nightcrawler learn of the attack on the X-Mansion from Logan, they head towards Boston in the X-Jet to pick up the others from Bobby's house. During their journey, Magneto and Mystique, who helped the former to escape from his prison, offer their help in bringing down William Stryker who, as revealed by Magneto, was planning to use Xavier and his handling of the Stryker's Cerebro to kill all the mutants on Earth. He also reveals Stryker's base of operations to be Alkali Lake. The X-Men agree to the alliance.
At Alkali Lake, Jean discovers that Stryker's base is underground. Mystique, impersonating Wolverine, infiltrates the base and tricks Stryker's troops into opening a gateway for the X-Men to enter. There, Wolverine decides to explore the base by himself, and he comes across an abandoned laboratory. He starts to remember what had happened to him and how he was experimented upon with the adamantium. Stryker arrives and clears Wolverine's doubts, revealing that he had created the "animal within Wolverine". Just before Wolverine can get his hands on him, Lady Deathstrike intervenes and battles Wolverine. Wolverine soon incapacitates her by injecting her with heated adamantium. He then trails Styker, while the X-Men rescue Cyclops, Xavier, and the kidnapped mutant children.
After the destruction of his base, Stryker attempts to flee in his helicopter but is caught by Wolverine and interrogated. Stryker refuses to cooperate and is pinned by Wolverine, leaving him to be drowned when the dam collapses. As the X-Men leave, Jean sacrifices herself to protect them from the flood. Both Wolverine and Cyclops mourn her death.
X-Men: The Official Game[]
Following Jean's death, Logan takes out his anger and frustration during a simulation of his battle with Sabretooth in the Danger Room. After nearly being defeated, Iceman arrives and Logan agrees to run his training program that the still-mourning Cyclops was to supposed to run him through.
Soon after, Professor X asks the X-Men to return to Alkali Lake to retrieve irreplaceable parts from Cerebro. Once inside, they discover a group of HYDRA ransacking the base. Nightcrawler and Colossus are sent to find the Cerebro parts while Wolverine and Storm investigate HYDRA's presence. Both soon discover that Stryker had a back-up plan to eradicate mutant-kind; the Sentinels.
Wolverine soon encounters Lady Deathstrike. She knocks out Storm and locks her in a chest while she battles Wolverine in the eye of a hurricane created by Storm in her panic. After Wolverine defeats her, Deathstrike escapes with HYDRA, the remaining Sentinels, and the Mastermold. Wolverine tells Storm he is going to follow because Deathstrike is a key to his past, however small. He promises to return as he attaches himself to Deathstrike's helicopter, which is en route to Tokyo, while Iceman, Storm, Colossus, and Nightcrawler return to the Institute.
In Tokyo, Logan infiltrates HYDRA's main base and interrupts a conversation between Deathstrike and Silver Samurai, the latter telling the former not to feel dishonored by Stryker's method of controlling her. As he interrupts their discussion, the Silver Samurai flees, leaving Logan to fight Deathstrike. As they battle each other, he emerges victorious when she is crushed under a pile of rubble.
Logan then follows Silver Samurai to his base. He tells him that he is a mutant, and if he can defeat him in combat, he will tell him how to defeat the Sentinels through the Mastermold. The Silver Samurai's power is the ability to charge his sword with energy, letting it slice through nearly anything and channeling energy blasts through it. After defeating the Samurai in combat, Logan gains the information and informs the X-Men how to defeat Mastermold.
In Hong Kong, the X-Men are attacked by the new towering Giant Sentinels, crashing the X-Jet and leaving Iceman to defeat them. Iceman wipes out the Sentinels as Mastermold lurks in the distance. Magneto and his Brotherhood of Mutants arrive, and he uses his powers of magnetism to crush the Sentinels. With the temporary alliance now over, Magneto sends Sabretooth after a new recruit for his Brotherhood; Jason Stryker, whose mind control powers could serve as a great asset.
Arriving inside the Mastermold, Nightcrawler attempts to disable its control center while he is aided by a different, nicer "apparition" of Jason Stryker who helps point the way through the maze of the Mold's body. When he arrives at the Mastermold's command center, he finds Jason, who hates his younger manifestation, a reference to his split psyche.
Wolverine arrives in the Mastermold, and Jason uses his powers to make Wolverine fight a horde of himself in a mental battle. Victorious, Wolverine heads to Nightcrawler's location in the Mastermold's "head". Jason tries to distract Nightcrawler but fails. Nightcrawler disables the Mastermold's neural net and Iceman destroys the Mastermold's core, rendering it useless.
Sabretooth soon arrives, holding the unconscious Jason Stryker. Wolverine intervenes while Nightcrawler takes Jason to safety and Wolverine then attacks Sabretooth. After an intense battle, Wolverine throws Sabretooth from a great height and keeps him trapped in the Mastermold. After this battle, Wolverine and the X-Men return to the Institute.
X-Men: The Last Stand[]
Wolverine and the X-Men are seen training in the Danger Room. Wolverine is not in his X-Men uniform and is smoking a cigar while Storm leads the team, as he makes it harder for her to control the team. He makes Colossus throw him to the Sentinels' head and cuts it off. To Storm's annoyance, she complains to Logan about his actions as he then justifies himself saying that he was just a substitute to Cyclops, who is still mourning Jean's death.
Professor Xavier later sends Wolverine and Storm to investigate Alkali Lake. When they arrive, the two encounter telekinetically floating rocks, Cyclops' glasses, and an unconscious Jean.
Xavier explains that the majority of Jean's power is seated in her unconscious mind and that, as a result, her powers are largely fueled by instinct, and not under her complete control. In fact, Jean was so powerful that he had to put telepathic blocks on her mind to help keep her powers under control. Her bottled up powers manifested themselves as an id-like alternate personality called the "Dark Phoenix". Wolverine is initially disgusted to learn that Xavier had kept Jean in check telepathically, but when she awakens, he realizes she is not the Jean Grey he knew. Wolverine inquires about Cyclops, but she cannot remember and fears she has killed him. Jean pleads with Wolverine to kill her before she harms anybody else, but when he refuses, the Phoenix surfaces and telekinetically slams him into a wall. She then makes her escape. Magneto, also aware that Jean's powers are loose, meets Xavier at Jean's house. The two men try to win Jean's loyalty until the Dark Phoenix resurfaces, unleashing her devastating power. Soon Wolverine fights Juggernaut, and Storm battling Callisto, taking out Quill and Arclight. Furious at being caged within Jean's subconscious for 20 years, Phoenix destroys her family's house, disintegrates Xavier, and leaves with Magneto.
Wolverine and Storm profoundly mourn Charles' death. Following the losses of Xavier, Cyclops, and Rogue (who decides to take the mutant cure), the X-Men regroup and confront Magneto's enlarged Brotherhood of Mutants, which is attacking the Worthington Labs pharmaceutical facility on Alcatraz Island.
During the battle, Shadowcat leaves to save Leech and at the end of the battle, Beast injects Magneto with the cure, nullifying his mutant powers. After this, Wolverine nearly coaxes Jean back to sanity. However, soldiers arrive and fire upon Jean. The Dark Phoenix quickly emerges and begins to disintegrate everything and everyone around her. While the X-Men and the surviving mutants and humans flee to safety, Wolverine fights his way to Jean, relying upon his healing abilities to save him from her destructive power. Momentarily gaining control, Jean begs Wolverine to save her. Professing his love for her, Wolverine reluctantly kills her by stabbing her in the stomach with his claws.
The Wolverine[]
Logan returns to the Canadian wilderness. Haunted and guilt-ridden by Jean Grey's death, Logan again seeks the quiet life, attempting to renounce his life of violence. After getting into a fight with some men at a bar, Yukio tracks his whereabouts and takes him to Japan to see the man he saved from the Nagasaki bombing in 1945, Yashida, now the head of the Yashida Corporation.
Logan meets Yashida, who wants to return the favor by taking his immortality away from him and giving it to himself, who is dying of cancer. After Logan refuses, he meets his son Shingen Yashida and his granddaughter Mariko Yashida - whom he saves the life of following a suicide attempt.
That night, while Logan dreams of Jean, Viper injects a robotic parasite into him body, affecting his healing ability. During the night, Yukio informs him of Yashida's death.
The next morning, he attends the funeral of Yashida, where he saves Mariko from Yakuza assassins with the help of Kenuichio Harada. Wolverine gets shot multiple times and finds he is not healing as quickly as before.
After getting Mariko to safety, Wolverine follows her onto a bullet train, where he encounters more Yakuza assassins and kills them before they hide in a local motel. He stands guard in the rain while Mariko sleeps, and soon passes out from his injuries after having a hallucination of Jean. He awakens to find Mariko getting the motel owner's grandson, a veterinarian, to stitch him up.
Logan and Mariko then hide in Yashida's house in southern Japan, and as they start to fall for each other, Logan reveals moments from his past such as the war and Jean. Yukio then has a vision of Logan dying with blood everywhere and his heart in his hand, not beating. She attempts to warn him but is too late, as Mariko is captured by the Yakuza who, after intimidating him, revealed to be hired by Mariko's fiance - the corrupt Chief of Justice Noburo Mori. After Logan and Yukio confront Noburo at his luxury apartment, he reveals that Shingen had hired the kidnapping before being thrown off by Logan, landing in a pool.
Wolverine and Yukio arrive at Yashida home in Tokyo, where he finds the parasite on his heart. He starts to extract it when Shingen enters, with Yukio defending Wolverine. He dies in the process, but has his healing ability restored and revives, eventually killing Shingen. Yukio and Wolverine then follow Harada and Viper to the Yashida Research Center in northern Japan to find Mariko, where Wolverine is attacked by Harada and the Yashida family's ninja clan.
He is then placed in a machine created by Viper, where she reveals the plans of extracting his immortality and introduces her associate, the Silver Samurai, who cuts through Wolverine's claws. Mariko escapes from Harada and manages to direct the machine Logan is in into the Silver Samurai's sword strike, breaking it and freeing him. The Silver Samurai, who revealed as Yashida, drills through his adamantium claws and extracts his immortality. Mariko then stabs him as Wolverine's bone claws start to grow back. Yashida takes a final stab from Wolverine and falls to his death. After passing out, Wolverine had one more hallucination of Jean and moves on from her death.
Logan says goodbye to Mariko, now CEO of the Yashida Corporation, and boards a plane with Yukio, who reminds him that she is still his bodyguard and they depart.
Two years later, Logan is at an airport and is approached by Magento and Charles Xavier about a new threat to wipe out all mutants. In some point between 2015 and 2023, Magneto, using his returned powers, helps Logan to grow new adamantium claws from adamantium that Logan has in his body.
X-Men: Days of Future Past[]
Eight years later, Wolverine, Storm, Professor X, and Magneto arrive to find their fellow X-Men members in China where they plan to send Wolverine back to 1973 to stop Mystique from killing Bolivar Trask, which triggered the Sentinel Program. Because of his healing abilities, he is the only one that can physically and mentally survive the trip. Shadowcat sends him back to his younger body and he wakes up in 1973 next to a woman where three men shoot at him. Wolverine then kills them and goes to find Professor X.
Wolverine then goes to the X-Mansion where he makes a rough encounter with Hank McCoy. Wolverine finally sees Charles and asks his help, who reluctantly agrees. They plan to break Magneto out of prison for killing President John F. Kennedy. The three first head to Peter Maximoff's house and asks him to help. At the Pentagon, Charles, Wolverine, Quicksilver, and Hank sneak into the facility and free Erik.
While pursuing and capturing Mystique, Wolverine sees William Stryker and has traumatic flashbacks. In 2023, Wolverine starts violently shaking and stabs Shadowcat with his claws. Back in 1973, he briefly does not know why he’s there and who young Charles is. Later, when a depressed Charles is unable to use Cerebro to find Mystique, Logan has him use his mind as a "bridge" to his future self, allowing the two Charles Xavier's to communicate through him. The future Charles Xavier convinces his past self not to give up and he is able to use Cerebro once more.
As Wolverine, Professor X and Hank go to the unveiling of the Sentinels to find Mystique, the Sentinels begin attacking the public. Magneto lifts an entire stadium and transports it to surround the White House and puts all but one Sentinel on lookout, and makes it go after Wolverine and Beast. Wolverine attacks it but Magneto stabs him with reinforcement steel then drowns him in a nearby river. While Wolverine is incapacitated, his actions lead to the past Charles Xavier finishing what he started and changing the future. Back in 2023, the Sentinels are close to firing upon the X-Men but everyone disappears after Shadowcat finally breaks the connection, causing Wolverine's changes to the timeline to take effect.
Having successfully altered the timeline, Wolverine awakens in the Xavier Institute in the new future at precisely the same time he was sent back in time, to find Shadowcat, Rogue, Iceman, Colossus, Beast, Professor X and to his shock, Cyclops and Jean Grey alive again. Wolverine visits Professor X and reveals he has just finished time traveling and asks what happened in the last fifty years, apparently possessing no memory of the events of the new timeline. A delighted Professor X tells him they have a lot to catch up on.

In 1973, after sleeping with the woman he is supposed to be protecting, Wolverine's body is taken over by his future self's mind due to Shadowcat's powers in order to change the future. Wolverine is left trapped there for an unknown period of time until Mystique, disguised as Major William Stryker, has him rescued and takes custody of him for an unknown reason.
X-Men: Apocalypse[]
Through unknown means, Wolverine is captured by the real Stryker and gets subjected to the Weapon X program at Alkali Lake, gaining an adamantium skeleton in the process. He was shown with a harness, head-gear and some cords pierced into his torso, designed to brainwash him into a living weapon for Stryker to command. The effect of the brainwashing turned Wolverine feral and primal, causing him to become instinctively aggressive and berserk. When Jean Grey, Cyclops, and Nightcrawler infiltrate the facility to rescue their captured friends from Stryker, Jean discovers Wolverine's containment unit and telepathically learns of his condition. She telekinetically unlocks the unit in an attempt to take some incoming guards out resulting in the seemingly mindless mutant going on a violent rampage that leaves multiple personnel slaughtered.
Upon reaching the exit, Cyclops confronts Wolverine, as the 2 are about to engage, Jean stops them and telepathically tells Wolverine she can help him. Jean takes off the helmet and puts her hands on Wolverine's head, and partially restores his memories, which makes him remember his first name is "Logan". With no words, the mutant acknowledging her, then removes his additional gear and flees into the wilderness.
Deadpool 2[]
In one of the mid-credits scenes, Wolverine appears in a scene where he fights Weapon XI in X-Men Origins: Wolverine but then Deadpool, who had been travelling in time with Cable's dispositive, kill his Weapon XI version shoot him several times and says who he only "resolving the timeline" and he jokingly says to his old friend Logan to remove the arty and then he travel in time again going away leaving Logan confuse but at the same time happy that Deadpool haved saved him.
Logan[]
In 2029, Logan is working as a Limo driver and has started going by his birth name James Howlett where he escorts all types of people from businessmen to bachelorettes, hoping to save up enough money that he can buy a boat and take Charles, himself, and Caliban out to sea where they will not have to worry about Charles' seizures hurting anyone. One day, Logan is approached by Gabriela, a nurse for Transigen, who asks him to escort her and an 11-year-old girl, Laura, to a place in North Dakota called "Eden". Logan is later met by Donald Pierce, Transigen's cybernetically-enhanced chief of security, who offers him a job to find Gabriela and Laura for him, but he refuses him also.
After some time Logan decides to reluctantly accept the job for Gabriela, only to find out that she has been murdered. Returning home and intent on getting Charles to safety Logan is met by Donald Pierce but is knocked out by Laura who snuck into his car on the way back Logan gives Caliban the responsibility of dropping Pierce off on the side of the road as he gets Charles ready. However the Pierce returns with his cybernetically-enhanced enforcers, the Reavers –a and Caliban is captured . Logan and Laura manage to escape them however and later Logan and Xavier learn through a video on Gabriela's phone that Transigen was breeding mutant children with DNA samples from several mutants for the "X-23" project, but found they were difficult to control as they grew up. Upon completion of the "X-24" project, the children were deemed unnecessary and were to be put to death. Gabriela helped several children escape from the Transigen compound before smuggling Laura across the border. Furthermore, Laura is revealed to be Logan's daughter, as she was bred with his DNA from when he escaped from Alkali Lake in 1983.
The group decides to stay at a Hotel in Oklahoma City, While there Logan discovers that Eden doesn't exist, and is just a place referenced in one of the many X-Men comic book that Laura brought with her. While Logan is out The Reavers find their whereabouts, and Xavier suffers another seizure and freezes everyone in the hotel with a psychic blast forcing Logan to power through the Hotel. Making his way up Logan kills the several Reavers surrounding Charles and injects Xavier with a suppressant before they leave the city, with the overall ordeal leaving hundreds injured and dozens dead killing six of the X-Men (Deadpool, Colossus, Domino, Cable, Firefist, Quicksilver and much other mutants survived). The trio is given shelter by a local family, the Munsons, after helping them round up their horses during a highway incident. When a pipe burst on the families property Logan and Will Munson go to fix it where Logan drives off some harassers of the Munsons. While they are out X-24, a feral clone of Wolverine without his own healing factor and a weaker adamantium skeleton stabs Xavier through the chest fatally wounding him and slaughters Will's wife and son, and when they return Will himself is mortally wounded, X-24 then captures Laura. Logan arrives and finds the injured Xavier, who dies shortly after.
Logan battles X-24 but is unable to overcome X-24s youth and savagery and Caliban blows himself to let Laura and Logan escape by setting off two grenades which destroys the van he is in and Will appears and impales X-24 on the forepart of a combine harvester with his car and then keeps shooting X-24 in the head with a shotgun before dying, allowing Logan and Laura to escape. After burying Xavier, an emotionally devastated Logan passes out and wakes up in a clinic with the doctor attempting to convince him to get some treatment for his condition, but Logan refuses. Laura convinces Logan to take her to Eden and after a loud arguement Logan gives in to show her it is not real. On the way there, Laura convinces Logan to sleep and she drives them the rest of the way to Eden.
Logan and Laura arrive at Eden, a safe haven run by Rictor and the other Transigen test subjects who managed to escape. Logan then learns that the children plan to make a journey across the forest to the Canadian border and entrusts Laura to them. During their journey, the children are located and captured by the Reavers. Logan knowing the children need his help makes the fatal decision to use the serum left to him by Rictor to restore his healing factor which rapidly heals all his past scars and injuries but also has dangerous side effects once it wears off. He makes his way to the children and begins slaughtering the Reavers, but the serum quickly wears off as he meets Zander Rice, the head of the Transigen project. Rice reveals that the destruction of mutantkind is due to a virus created by the Transigen Project, as an effort to control the mutant population and create their own for weaponization. He also mentions that Logan killed his father during his escape from the Weapon X program in Alkali Lake. Logan shoots Rice dead and Pierce releases X-24 on him, while the children wipe out the remaining Reavers before overwhelming Pierce and killing him. Logan and Laura proceed to fight X-24, with Rictor using his seismic powers to lift the earth under an armored truck and slam it on X-24.
However, X-24 lifts the truck off of him and catches Logan off-guard, fatally impaling him on a tree stump, before Laura is able to kill X-24 with an adamantium bullet Logan had been holding on to if he ever wanted to kill himself. Now dying, Logan with his last breaths tells Laura to not be the weapon Transigen wanted her to be. Holding her hand, Logan finally understands what it means to have a family and dies in her arms, fulfilling the prophecy that Yukio made years ago that he would die with his heart in his hand. After 200 hundred years of fighting and suffering, Logan was at last at peace.
Laura and the children mourn his death, and later they bury him. Laura tearfully adjusts the cross on his grave, and places it on its side creating an "X" to honor her father as an X-Man and the Wolverine.
Marvel Cinematic Universe[]
Deadpool & Wolverine[]
Deadpool is informed by Paradox of the Time Variance Authority that Logan was an Anchor Being, which was an individual of such pivotal importance that when they die, their universe eventually died, too. Deadpool is relieved to learn it took millennia for the universe to completely end, but Paradox revealed that he was unwilling to wait for the natural death, thus had a machine constructed called the Time Ripper that would immediately erase the timeline. Deadpool broke Paradox's nose to steal his TemPad, transporting to Logan's grave site in the woods.
Deadpool believed that healing factors like his or Logan's would be so powerful that death was actually impossible. However, Deadpool is disappointed and enraged to discover that Logan was undoubtedly dead, as all that remained was his adamantium skeleton and some patches of leathery hide and hair. A squad of TVA troops arrive to detain Deadpool.
While periodically dancing to Bye, Bye, Bye by NSYNC, which was the song that Logan hated in X2, Deadpool used the adamantium skeleton to kill the troops, breaking it apart in the process, making him resort to tying the claws on his arms like bladed gauntlets. When all that's left is the skull, Deadpool kicked it like a football.
Logan's daughter, Laura/X-23, had reached early adulthood, but had been considered an undesirable person, so had been banished by the TVA to the Void. She would join a team of heroes known as the Legacies, who agreed to help Deadpool to raid the fortress of Cassandra Nova, the evil twin sister of Professor Charles Xavier, who led a force of supervillains to enforce her will upon the Void. The group was once larger, but now the remaining Legacies included her, Blade, Elektra, and Gambit. Deadpool's chosen Wolverine variant refused to join due to considering it hopeless.
When Wolverine is drinking outside, he is defiantly joined by Laura; Wolverine pointed out that he wasn't the Logan she knew, but she claimed that he was similar enough to remind her of her Logan. She described him as coarse, drunk, and unhelpful at first, but eventually he grew to care about her, and he ensured that she and many other Mutant children were allowed to have a chance of a better life. Wolverine confessed about his failure to save his X-Men, and the reason he wore the yellow supersuit now was to remember his friends, but also never allow himself to forget his failure to save them. Wolverine noted that he was the wrong man for the job to save people, which Laura replied so was her Logan, but like him, Wolverine would be capable of saving the day regardless.
Before beginning battle with Nova's forces, Laura put on sunglasses akin to the pair she took from the gas station on the road trip with Logan, thus showing she kept mementos from her time with Logan and still valued the memories. From her skill and experience from Logan, she was able to defeat Juggernaut, killing him to throw his helmet to Deadpool, who used it to nullify Nova's powers. From Wolverine's time with Deadpool and the conversation with Laura, Wolverine managed to briefly make Nova feel compassion by explaining how her brother would have saved her if he actually knew about her existence, even in spite of what she has done, and that Charles had taken a chance on him, which he hoped to return to her.
While Nova had helped Deadpool and Wolverine to return to Wade's universe, Paradox's attempted assassination on her and learning about the Time Ripper made her resume her malevolent personality. Despite her almost starting to annihilate realities, Deadpool and Wolverine were able to sabotage the machine, resulting only in its destruction and seemingly her death, too.
Logan's desire to ensure Laura's happy future was rectified as Deadpool, due to him and Wolverine saving all existence from Cassandra Nova, had convinced the TVA to rescue the surviving Legacies. Laura was cheerfully attending Deadpool's party, along with his closest friends.
Biography[]
Early Life[]
James "Jimmy" Howlett was born in 1832 in what would later be known as the Northwest Territories of Canada. In 1845, James lay sick in his bed while Victor, who was visiting him, kept him company as James' father, John Howlett, arrived to check in on him. A few moments later, Victor's father, and John's groundskeeper, Thomas Logan (who was also having an affair with John Howlett's wife), entered the Howlett home, drunk, looking for James' mother, Elizabeth Howlett, and had a confrontation with John, which resulted in Thomas shooting John. James then heard the gunfire and went to investigate, finding John dead.
It was under this grief-stricken incident that, in an act of vengeance, James' mutation began to manifest as he sprouted bone claws, slowly emerging from his fists and knuckles. In a wild rage, James roared in rage and fury, and, using his claws, impaled Thomas. However, before dying, Thomas revealed that John wasn't James' real father. Much to James' horror, Thomas revealed with his dying breath that he was James' true father by telling him he is also his son.
After Thomas died, Elizabeth, horrified by James' mutation, cast her son out by calling him a freak as she questioned James as to what he was. Confused about what was happening to him, James fled and ran into the woods with Victor following behind him. After running away, Victor, who was also a mutant, caught up and overtook James. Victor said that they were brothers and they both vowed to stick together and look after each other no matter what, which eventually led them to a life of rage and violence. As Victor was truly his own family since they shared a father, James started going by the name 'Logan'.
Over the next 128 years, as the two boys grew into men, Logan and Victor fought bravely together as soldiers for the United States in numerous wars. The wars the two brothers participated in throughout their years together included the American Civil War (both participating on the Union side led by American President Abraham Lincoln), World War I (on the Western Front), World War II (both participating in the D-Day Invasion), and the Vietnam War using their mutant powers. However, Victor grew increasingly violent and uncontrolled as time passed.
Meeting Ichirō Yashida[]
Sometime in 1945, Logan transferred from the European front to the Pacific front, where he is captured by Japanese forces prior to August 9th and sent to a POW camp near Nagasaki. He was put into a form of solitary confinement in a nearby well, topped with a tank turret. Logan was a witness to the Nagasaki bombing on August 9, 1945, where he saved the life of Ichirō Yashida, a young officer in the Imperial Japanese Army. As the force of the nuclear blast rolled toward them, Logan grabbed Yashida before he could commit seppuku with his comrades and forced him into the well, covering him with an iron plate, shielding Yashida from the fire of the blast, the officer suffering a small burn on his face that would leave a permanent scar. Logan himself, horrifically burned, survived and healed, much to Yashida's astonishment. They remained underground for an indeterminate time until Logan felt it was safe for them to surface. Yashida thanked Logan and offered him a Japanese samurai sword as a token of gratitude. Logan refused, said to hold onto it for him, and promised to return for it in the future.
Meeting Charles and Erik[]
In 1962, while traveling the world searching for mutants to fight the Hellfire Club, a young Charles Xavier and Erik Lehnsherr came across Logan in a bar. They introduced themselves, but before they could continue, he harshly dismissed them.
Affair With Gwen[]
In January 1973, Wolverine was hired as a a young woman's bodyguard to but started a sexual relationship with her against the rules. He was discovered the next morning.
Becoming Weapon X[]
- "If men were meant to fly we'd grow wings."
- ―Wolverine[src]
During the Vietnam War in the 1970s — the last war Logan and Victor participated in — Victor attacked and attempted to rape and kill a young Vietnamese village woman. When soldiers from his platoon and commanding officer tried to stop him, Victor killed the commanding officer, then brutally attacked the soldiers who tried to stop him. Logan came to his aid and reluctantly assisted Victor, released his claws, and prepared to defend his brother. Logan was ready to fight for him as promised, revealing their gifts to the other men in their unit. For their grave insubordination, this incident led to Victor and Logan to be sentenced to death and placed in front of a firing squad to be executed after decapitating the senior officer. They were shot by a firing squad but did not die, as their regenerative healing factors kept them alive.
They survived the execution and death sentence and, because of their unique regenerative healing abilities, both mutants were placed in a holding cell soon after. Logan and Victor were eventually brought to the attention of Major William Stryker, who visited and confronted them in the cell. Stryker asked them to join his special team of mutants called Team X as a way out of imprisonment. Victor and Logan accepted and joined other mutants - Wade Wilson, Agent Zero, Chris Bradley, Fred Dukes and John Wraith - on covert missions throughout the world.
During one of their missions, while under Stryker's command, Team X was sent to search for and retrieve a mysterious meteorite - later discovered to be adamantium - from a diamond trafficking operation in Lagos, Nigeria. They attacked a compound there and after defeating the compound's security forces, obtained a mysterious rock from the compound's leader and discovered that it originated from a remote village.
Upon arriving at the village, Stryker and the team them interrogated nearby villagers to see if there were any other meteorites and were informed that the rock fell from the sky as a meteor. Stryker wanted more information and had Wade Wilson interrogate in his place, being the only one who could speak in the local tongue. When they threatened the village as to where the meteorite came from, the village chief refused to tell Stryker the origins of the meteorites, as they believe them to be sacred. After receiving no further answers, Stryker ordered his team to attack the villagers, first directing Victor to kill the chief. The whole village descended into chaos as Stryker's team started killing the civilians. Logan stopped the mutants when they started attacking a nearby village.
After a brief argument with Victor, Logan quit the team and said he couldn't kill innocent people, being disgusted by the murders committed by his teammates, Stryker's willingness to kill innocent civilians, and Victor's acceptance of this. He promptly left and abandoned Victor and the group before walking into the night, ignoring Victor's calls to him. With his departure, Team X disbanded. Eventually, only Agent Zero and Victor stayed faithful to Stryker.
Six years after leaving Team X, Logan was living in western Canada with a school teacher named Kayla Silverfox, residing in a cabin high in the Canadian Rockies, and working as a lumberjack. After many years of warfare, Logan desired a more quiet and tranquil life. Kayla manipulated him into a state of complacency with her power, comforting him from the nightmares of the past.
One day, Agent Zero and Stryker visited Logan at his job to inform him that Bradley and Wade had been recently killed. Before doing so, Stryker asked Logan if he remembered Agent Zero, with Logan responding by asking Zero if he was still shooting first and asking questions later. Zero responded by pulling out his concealed gun, shooting Logan's cigar, and, after putting away his gun, asked Logan a follow-up question as to if he's still chewing on cheap cigars. Stryker told Logan he has a job for him and Logan responded by telling Stryker he already had a job. Zero humorously questioned Logan's job payment as a lumberjack by asking if it pays 18 grand a year. Logan corrected him, saying his pay was actually 18.5 grand a year, before adding that he hadn't had to kill anybody lately. Zero asked if Logan was starting to miss it, and Logan, irritated, said, "I am now," before Stryker broke them up with an order to Zero to get back into the car.
One night, Kayla told Logan about a spirit who was tricked into being parted forever from his lover, the Moon. Stemming from her Native American ancestry, she recited a story to Logan about a spirit named Kuekuatsheu who fell in love with the moon but was fooled by the Trickster into stepping foot in the mortal world from which he could never return. Thus, the spirit, Kuekuatsheu, was parted forever from the moon, and was forced to look at the Moon forever but never be with her again, howling at her whenever he saw her. One day, while Logan was at work, Kayla was attacked by Victor. Sensing Victor's presence in the area, he rushed to Kayla's abandoned car but found that he was too late for any kind of rescue. Kayla was dead and, from the claw marks left on the abandoned car, Logan realized this was Victor's doing.
That evening, he found Victor in a bar and, in a state of rage, lunged at him. After a brutal fight, Victor snapped off Logan's bone claws on his left hand before leaving. The next morning, Logan woke up in an emergency room, where Stryker happened to be present. Stryker told Logan that he could help him exact revenge on Victor with an experimental procedure involving adamantium. Logan agreed to go through with it, but warned that he is solely bent on revenge.
Prior to the adamantium procedure, Logan asked for new dog tags with the name "Wolverine" on them - a reference to the story Kayla told him. During the excruciatingly painful procedure, Logan's skeleton was laced with molten adamantium. His heartbeat flatlined, leaving Stryker and his team believing their subject had died. After a few moments, though, he resuscitated and escaped the facility after overhearing Stryker order that his memory be erased for so that his DNA could be used for an upcoming project. Logan continued to flee until he found and hid in a barn.
The elderly couple who owned the barn offered him food and shelter. Although wary of him at first, they soon warmed up to him, even giving Logan a jacket which belonged to their son and allowing him to take their motorcycle for a spin. However, after offering Logan breakfast, Agent Zero killed the couple. The barn was bombed as Logan escaped on the bike. After a long and daring chase, he attacked Zero's helicopter and took it down.
After killing Zero, Logan attempted to locate the two remaining members of Team X and found John Wraith and Fred Dukes in Las Vegas. Intent on killing Victor in revenge for Kayla's death and Stryker for his betrayal, Logan tried to inquire Dukes about Stryker's activities. A misunderstanding ensued, leading to a boxing match between the two. Logan ended up beating Dukes and interrogated him until Dukes told him about a mutant and former prisoner named Remy LeBeau, or as most people called him, Gambit. Logan and Wraith found Gambit in New Orleans and asked him about Stryker's Island, where mutants were being held hostage for Stryker's new project, Weapon XI/Deadpool.
Gambit, who believed that Logan wanted to take him back to the island, attacked him. Logan then saw Wraith's dead body with Victor crouched next to it, collecting samples of Wraith's DNA. Enraged, after knocking out Gambit, Logan engaged in a fight with Victor. In the battle, Logan gained the upper hand and was preparing to kill Victor. However, Gambit, who had regained consciousness during the battle, attacked Logan from a rooftop, allowing Victor to escape. After defeating Gambit, Logan clarified his intentions and convinced Gambit to take him to the island.
With Gambit's help, Logan arrived at the Island, which turned out to be Three Mile Island. After Logan arrived on the Island, he found Stryker, who then told him about Deadpool and reveals that Kayla (who was present on the island) wasn't really killed. She was revealed to be alive and reluctantly working for Stryker. As Victor was watching through the window from a nearby room, Wolverine is told that Victor and Stryker were also working together to capture various mutants, which led to Wolverine being tricked into agreeing to have adamantium bonded to his skeleton by using his rage against Victor from killing the woman Logan loved. Kayla had, at some point, been recruited by Stryker for the purpose of seducing Logan and creating an incident to motivate him to join the Weapon X program and participate in the adamantium procedure - her faked death. After Logan discovered that Kayla was not only alive but also working for William Stryker, he likened her to the Trickster who played Logan as the fool. This hurt Logan deeply and, feeling betrayed after learning this, he decided to leave the facility and move on with his life.
Wolverine, having heard Kayla's screams and calls of distress, rushed back to her rescue, engaging in a fight with Victor yet again. Wolverine attacked Victor and they battled each other, with Logan ultimately gaining the upper-hand and after defeating him in combat, Wolverine managed to pin his half-brother down and was in a position to kill Victor. Logan, finally getting the chance to decapitate and kill Victor, spared him when Kayla intervened and talked Logan out of it. She convinced him that he would be no better than Stryker, saying that Logan was not an animal while Victor taunted him. Logan, listening to Kayla's pleas, chose not to give into his animal instincts, and instead punched and knocked Victor out, sparing him.
Following the fight between Victor and Logan, Kayla said that she only did what Stryker wanted her to do because her sister, Emma Frost, was being held a captive on the island along with other mutants, some of whose powers were pooled into the Deadpool project. Kayla then told Logan that she agreed to take part in Stryker's plans because he had promised to release her sister if she did so. Kayla assured Logan that her feelings for him were genuine and that their love was real. He agreed to help her and they made their way to free the mutant prisoners
After freeing the imprisoned mutants, while leading them out of the facility, Logan and the mutants were stopped and confronted by Weapon XI, controlled by Stryker. Logan ordered the others to find another way out so that he could engage this new abomination on his own without putting the other mutants in danger. They clashed as the other mutants fled. Using Chris Bradley's power, Stryker was able to control Weapon XI to kill Wolverine. With the other powers he had gained from several other mutants (including Cyclops' optic beams, Wolverine's healing power, John Wraith's teleportation, Chris Bradley's technopathy, and Wilson's prized blades used as two retractable claws), he was ready to fight and kill Wolverine.
Logan climbed one of the nuclear reactor's cooling towers with Weapon XI in pursuit. Weapon XI followed in an instant using Wraith's teleportation ability. Logan put forth his best effort but was pinned down. Just as Weapon XI was about to decapitate him at the command of Stryker, Victor shoved Weapon XI away, which made him fall into the reactor and took Logan with him. Victor caught Logan and told him that the only reason he saved him was so he could kill him himself, saying, "Nobody kills you but me."
Logan and Victor eventually tag team and ended up back to back with Deadpool teleporting in front of each of them back and forth. They eventually caught and stabbed him; however, Deadpool managed to teleport to the other side of the reactor. Deadpool's built-in optic blasts activated, threatening both Logan and Victor. As Deadpool fired his optic blasts, Victor attacked Deadpool as he fired on Logan with his optic blasts. Logan fell over the edge of the reactor as Victor was shot back while jumping at Weapon XI. Logan climbed back onto the reactor just as Weapon XI was blasting Victor into the ground. Just before Deadpool could kill Victor, Logan ran, jumped, and slashed Weapon XI through the neck, successfully decapitating him. Weapon XI held his neck as Logan kicked him into the nuclear reactor cooling tower, his head falling off as he tumbled below, with the lasers of his optic blasts still firing, blasting into and destroying the tower.
After defeating Deadpool, Logan helped Victor out of the hole and coldly informed Victor that, despite his help, their relationship was over, telling him that they're done. Nothing had changed between them, as Logan stated that he wanted nothing more to do with him. Victor responded, saying that they could never be finished and reminded Logan that they were still brothers, and that brothers should always look out for each other. Victor then jumped off the side of the reactor cooling tower.
As the reactor started to tumble, Logan followed, collapsing as he landed. Just before a piece of the reactor landed on Logan, Gambit saved him by breaking up the piece. Gambit and Logan had then briefly split up, with Gambit going to help the children and Logan attending to Kayla. Logan carried her a few steps before Stryker shot him in the back. In a feral rage, he turned and sprinted at Stryker, eventually jumping after him.
Mid-leap, Logan was shot in the head by Stryker with adamantium bullets and fell to the ground, unconscious, damaging his brain and losing much of his long-term memory. Just as Stryker was about to kill Kayla, she grabbed his ankle and, using her power, ordered him to leave, before dying. Logan awoke, and unbeknownst to him, he had forgotten everything and everyone, including Gambit and Kayla. However, when he saw Kayla's corpse, he shut her eyes, laying her to rest. Gambit and Logan soon went their separate ways.
In an added scene at the end of the movie, Wolverine was seen drinking at a bar in Japan. When the bartender asked if he was drinking to forget, Wolverine replied that he was actually drinking to remember.
Joining the X-Men[]
- "Hey, bub, I'm not finished with you yet."
- ―Wolverine[src]
Years later, Logan was seen as a cigar-smoking loner who wandered from place-to-place in Canada. He participated in cage fights to make money, taking advantage of the enhanced durability that his adamantium skeleton and healing factor granted him.
Marie, going by the name Rogue, walked inside a building where a crowd was cheering at a caged wrestling match beside a bar, which she watched. A match just ended, and it seemed that it was not the winner's first victory that night. A new wrestler entered the cage and a new battle began. At first, the new person seemed to have the upper hand, but the winner recovered at an amazing speed and fought back, easily defeating the new person in mere seconds. The winner and still champion was announced – Wolverine. Marie watched him in awe.
Later that night, after the fights are over, she was sat down at the bar quietly. Wolverine sat near her, ordering a beer. He looked at her, as she seemed out of place in the bar. In the background, a news report was telling about the upcoming gathering of world leaders in New York and that they would be talking about many topics, including the mutant phenomenon. The wrestler from earlier approached Wolverine and demanded his money, saying that no man could take a beating like that without a mark, implying that Logan must be a mutant. Wolverine would not budge, and the wrestler pretended to give up, but then pulled a knife and went to attack. Marie screamed at Wolverine to look out, and he jumped out of his chair and unsheathed his razor-sharp metal claws on the man's neck.
The barman threatened him with a shotgun. With superhuman speed, Wolverine slashed at the shotgun, slicing easily through it. Wolverine then left the bar and Marie ran after him, realizing he was a mutant. Thinking that he would understand, she got into his truck and hid in the trailer as he drove away.
Later, on the road, Wolverine noticed something in the back. He stopped the truck, got out, and checked the cart, where he soon found Marie, hiding. She apologized and says that she needed a ride. After he discovered Marie, Wolverine kicked her out by ordering her out into the cold, then began to get back into the truck. She yelled that she saved his life, but he said that she did not and started driving away. After a few meters, guilt made him stop and Marie entered the truck before he kept driving, thus allowing her to accompany him.
During the drive, they began to converse and slowly formed a father/daughter relationship. After he gave her something to eat, she introduced herself as Rogue. She asked him questions about his life, but he did not answer. He noticed that she was cold, turned on the heater, and told her to put her hands on it. While doing so, he almost touched her hands but she pulled them away. At first, he took it as fear, but she explained that when people come into physical contact with her skin they get hurt. She looked at his hands and asked him if it hurt when his claws come out. He answered that it hurt every time, and then asked her what kind of a name Rogue was. She asked the same question about his name, Wolverine, and he told her that his name was Logan.
She told him that her name was Marie and then advised him to wear his seat belt. He told her that he didn't need driving tips just before they slammed into a tree branch and Logan was thrown through the windshield a few dozen meters away into the snow. The truck started burning as Rogue awoke and saw Wolverine get up. He walked back and asked her if she was alright, to which she answered that she was stuck after watching in shock how his wounds healed. He walked over to help her, but his hyperactive senses picked on the scent of a foe – Sabretooth.
Suddenly, Sabretooth jumped out of the woods and threw Wolverine. He then threw him again onto the hood of the truck and walked over to him, towards Rogue, who was already terrified from the fire in the truck that had started and was creeping towards a gas canister. Then, two figures showed up behind Sabretooth – Cyclops and Storm. Cyclops put his hand to his visor and shot a powerful optic blast at Sabretooth. He then used his beams to release Rogue, and they grabbed her and Wolverine and ran away seconds before the truck exploded. Cyclops and Storm took the rescued pair to the X-Mansion.
Wolverine was lying in the X-Men's base, unconscious. Jean Grey was taking care of him. She tried giving him an injection but he woke up, thinking her an enemy. He managed to escape her grasp easily and ran away through the tunnels of Xavier's mansion. He was not sure which way to go, but then started hearing voices in his head – Charles Xavier, telepathically guiding him. He found a closet with clothes and took a shirt before an elevator opened right next to him. He entered and it automatically closed, taking him to the upper floors. He hid from some mutant kids running around and kept running, straight into a classroom, where Xavier was teaching a class. Xavier greeted him hello and then finished the lesson. The students left, and then one of them, a girl named Kitty, ran back because she had forgotten her purse. She then exited by phasing herself through the door. Logan looked confused and the professor introduced himself as Charles Xavier, and offered Logan breakfast. Logan asked where he was, and Xavier answered that he was in Westchester, New York – he was attacked and his people had brought him there for medical attention. Logan said that he didn't need any medical attention and asked where Rogue is. Xavier answered that she was there too and that she was fine.
Logan's rescuers entered. Xavier introduced them as Ororo Munroe, AKA Storm, and Scott Summers, AKA Cyclops. Scott held out his hand to shake with Logan, but Logan did not respond. Xavier told him that they saved his life and Jean entered. Xavier introduced her as well, and then told Logan that he was in Xavier's school for Gifted Youngsters – mutants, and that he was safe there from Magneto. Logan asked, "What’s a Magneto?", and Xavier answered that Magneto was a very powerful mutant and that the mutant who attacked him was an associate of Magneto's called Sabretooth. Logan thought the whole thing was ridiculous and started to leave, roughly telling Scott to get out of his way. Xavier then told him that he could help him figure out who he was. Telepathically, Xavier reminded him that it had been 15 years since Logan lost his memory, displaying his telepathic skills that could help Logan remember his past. Intrigued, Logan asked about what the place was.
Xavier told Logan more about the school and convinced him that it was the best place for Rogue to be in. He then told him that the school was only a cover and that the lowers levels were completely different. Xavier showed Logan the hangar containing the X-Men's supersonic jet, the Blackbird. He explained that when he was a boy he discovered he could control people's minds and that when he was seventeen, he had met a young man named Erik Lensherr, who had the ability to create and control magnetic fields. Believing that humanity would never accept them, Erik had grown angry at humanity and became Magneto. Xavier offered Logan a deal – 48 hours to discover why Magneto was after him, in exchange to help uncover his forgotten past.
In the X-Mansion, Jean was running tests on Logan. He apologized for hurting her earlier and tried to flirt with her, to which Jean responded with a sharp look and promptly put him into the scanning machine.
Later at night, Logan had seemingly accepted Xavier's offer to help him. Jean showed Logan to his room, where he would be staying for the night. Logan tried to resume flirting with Jean. He was jealous of her relationship with Scott and jokingly asked her if her gift was to "put up with that guy." Jean answered that she was telekinetic - she could move things with her mind. Logan asked, "What kind of things?" and she closed the closet door to demonstrate. She then said that she also had some telepathic abilities, though hers weren't nearly as powerful as the professor's. Logan told Jean to read his mind but she initially refused. After a moment of silence, though, she agreed and put her hands to his head. She saw images of fire and the operation he went through, and stopped. Logan eagerly held her hands and asked her with great anticipation to tell him what she saw, but Scott entered, interrupting them. Jean left slightly embarrassed, and Scott and Logan taunted each other about Jean and about how Scott had to rescue Logan. Before he left, Scott told Logan to stay away from his girl.
Later that night, Logan was sleeping in his room, having a nightmare about when the adamantium was attached to his skeleton. Rogue entered and tried to wake him up, but as he awoke, still tense from the nightmare, he screamed and his claws unsheathed in her chest. Shocked, he retracted them, leaving three holes in her body, and she quivered. He started yelling for help hysterically and she put up her hand and touched his cheek. Ororo, Jean, Scott and some kids (including Bobby) entered just in time to see her wounds heal and Logan pass out. Jean and Scott rushed to help Logan, and Rogue started apologizing and saying that it was an accident. She left the room and the other children stepped away from her in a panic. They looked at her with apprehension, though Iceman just looked concerned.
Later, Logan woke up with Xavier sitting next to him. He asked the professor if Rogue was fine, and he answers that she would be alright. Wolverine asked what happened and Xavier answered that whenever Rogue touched someone, she would absorb their energy. In the case of mutants, she would absorb their gifts. For Logan, she absorbed his ability to heal. Logan said that he felt like she almost killed him and Xavier said that if she had held on any longer, she could have.
In the basement, Xavier and Cyclops were trying to figure out what Magneto wanted with Wolverine. Xavier picked up that Scott did not like Logan. Just then, Logan and Ororo walked in and Logan asked where Rogue was. Xavier, after a short mind scan, said that she was gone. A few minutes later, Xavier, Scott, Jean, Ororo and Logan entered a secured room and Xavier welcomed Logan to Cerebro. Cerebro was a big round room, with a bridge leading to the machine. Xavier explained that Cerebro would amplify his powers and allow him to track mutants through large distances, which is how he intended to find Rogue. Logan asked why he did not use it to find Magneto, and Xavier told him that Magneto somehow found a way to shield himself from the machine. Logan asked how he would know how to do that and Xavier responded, saying that Magneto helped him build it. Then, he put the Cerebro helmet on his head and, after the others exit, started the search. Outside, Logan asked Jean if she had ever used Cerebro, and she answered she had not because it took a certain degree of control and for someone like her it would be dangerous. Inside, Xavier managed to locate Rogue at the train station after a short search. Logan started leaving to find her but Xavier stopped him, saying that if he left the mansion Magneto would capture him. Instead, he sent Cyclops and Storm to find her. In the garage, Scott and Ororo prepared to leave and Scott noticed that his motorcycle was missing.
On the road, Logan was riding Scott's motorcycle to the train station, where Rogue was sitting on a train, waiting for it to leave. She watched other people touching each other freely and felt sad that she would never get to feel human touch again. Logan found her and sat next to her. They apologized to each other about what had happened the previous night, and he asked her if she was running again. She told him that a boy in school told her that the professor was mad at her.
While on the train, Rogue asked Wolverine if he thought she should go back. He answered that he thought she should follow her instincts. After a pause, she told him about the first boy she had ever kissed, David, who had ended up in a coma for three weeks because of the kiss, and that she could still feel him and Logan inside her head. Logan hugged her through her shirt and convinced Rogue to stay with Xavier by telling her that he thought Xavier was one of the few people who could understand what she was going through and that he really wanted to help her, thus promising to take care of her. The train started to move and Logan convinced her to give "these geeks" another shot.
When the Brotherhood of Mutants arrived at the train station, Rogue's train stopped moving and the lights went out. Everybody screamed as Wolverine looked in horror as Magneto used his powers to literally slice the train up open and floated in. Logan popped his claws and Magneto said that he must be Wolverine, the man with metal running through all his body. He used his powers to lift Logan in the air and inflicted pain on him as Rogue screamed at him to stop. Logan asked Magneto what he wanted from him and Magneto answered that it wasn't him he wanted. Logan was horrified to realize that Magneto was really after Rogue. Magneto incapacitated Wolverine by tossing him away and then knocked Rogue unconscious with a tranquilizer dart and captured her. She soon became a component in Magneto's machine on the Statue of Liberty.
Back at the mansion, Logan was washing his face. He was angry at the professor for saying Magneto wanted him, and Xavier apologized, saying he had made a terrible mistake and Magneto's helmet was somehow designed to stop his telepathy. Logan left angrily to find her alone, but Storm tried to convince him to help and fight with them to defend the humans from Magneto. Logan declined, saying he did not want to help a world that hated him. He then said that Magneto was right – there was a war coming – and asked Storm if she was sure she was on the right side. She answered that at least she had chosen a side. He opened the door to leave and found Senator Kelly standing on the other side, looking for Dr. Jean Grey.
Underground, Kelly was lying on a table. Logan and Jean were standing there too. Xavier approached him and introduced himself. Kelly said that he was afraid to go to a regular hospital, and Xavier completed his sentence, saying that he was afraid they would treat him like a mutant. He told him that they were not all dangerous like he thought and Kelly told him to tell that to the ones who did this to him. Xavier asked Kelly to relax and started reading his mind. He entered his memory of Magneto turning him into a mutant and Mystique helping him out of the machine. Magneto looked tired and drained from the process.
Back in reality, a short while later, Xavier, Scott, Jean and Logan were in a room upstairs. Xavier explained that Magneto used a machine that produced radiation that triggered mutation in ordinary human beings. Jean continued, saying that the mutation was unnatural and Kelly's body was rejecting it – his cells were breaking down. Scott asked what the radiation will do to mutants and Xavier answered that nothing would happen, but it could seriously harm humans. Logan asked what Magneto wanted with Rogue and Xavier answered that he does not know. Annoyed, Logan turned to leave again, but then Scott found the answer – the machine had drawn its power from Magneto and it had nearly killed him. He deduced that Magneto wanted Rogue to absorb his power so she could do it in his place, which would allow him live. Storm entered Xavier's study just in time to break up an argument between Scott and Logan and informed them that Senator Kelly was dead. Xavier told them that he would go find Rogue and ordered the men to settle their dispute.
Cyclops, Jean, Storm and Wolverine discussed their battle plans. They understood Magneto's plan now completely, and they knew Magneto was not aware of the fact that his machine would kill regular humans. They knew that if he gave Rogue enough power, he would kill everybody in New York City. They planned to land on Liberty Island and spoil his plans. Logan asked about harbour patrol and Scott answered that if they had anything that could find their jet, they deserved to catch them. They left in the Blackbird as the students watched in awe. Scott flew the jet and when they reached the bridge, they landed on the water with Storm creating fog as cover.
The Blackbird landed and the X-Men got out. They look up, and saw the machine on top of the torch. As they passed through the metal detector, it beeped on Logan but he popped in claws in it. Cyclops turned towards him with an annoyed expression, and Wolverine sheathed the two outer claws, essentially flipping him off. Scott smiled and Jean rolled her eyes. They started walking carefully down the hall, but Toad and Mystique were already waiting for them, hidden. Logan's senses picked up on them, and he tells the others that there was someone there but he did not know where, and said to "keep your eye open" as a joke on Scott's expense. Out of nowhere, another Wolverine showed up and started battling Logan. The others weren't sure anymore who was the real Logan and who was the imposter. They both popped their claws and started attacking each other, slicing up the place in the process. Eventually, Mystique shifted back to her true form and managed to outmanoeuvre Wolverine.
Later on, Storm approached Logan and asked if it was him. He silenced her, used his sense of smell and told her that the other one was not far away. She said that they had to regroup and he responded, saying that there was a problem – she was not part of the group - and then unsheathed his claws in her stomach. She morphed to Mystique, and then fell to the ground. He found Scott and Jean, and Scott told him to prove that it really was him, to which Logan simply answered, "you're a dick", which Scott thought was proof enough. Storm showed up upstairs and they followed her up. They saw the torch and Logan suddenly told them all to get out of there. Cyclops asked what the problem was, and Logan said that he could not move. He floated in the air and gets pinned to the wall. Metal pieces flew and hooked the others to the walls, too, despite Scott's attempts to blast them. Cyclops was hooked in a way that his eyes, covered by his visor, was pointed at Jean's head, preventing him from shooting. Magneto floated down and aimed Logan's hands to his chest, which prevented him from popping his claws. Sabretooth joined them and removed Scott's visor, forcing him to close his eyes. Scott ordered Storm to fry him, but Magneto reminded him that it was not a good idea to send a bolted lightning into a huge conductive metal like copper, which the Statue of Liberty was made of.
Magneto explained his motives to the X-Men and they heard Rogue crying for help. Wolverine told him that if he were really so righteous, it would have been him in the machine. Magneto flew up to the machine, as Rogue continued to scream for help. Logan used all his strength to release himself with the claws, seemingly hurting himself and Jean yelled his name in worry. Sabretooth approached his body and Logan leaped at him and popped his claws into his stomach. Sabretooth shared Wolverine's healing factor, though, and they started battling on the statue's head.
During the battle, Wolverine recovered his dog tags. Sabretooth threw Wolverine off the statue, but he managed to cling on and jump up. He beat Sabretooth and heard Rogue scream in pain. He fell down and jammed his claws to the wall to hang on it, almost killing Scott and Jean, who were at the other side of the wall. Sabretooth thought he was dead and walked to Storm, only for Wolverine to jump back in with Cyclops' visor. Jean told Scott that when she told him, he should open his eyes. The torch smashed and the machine began to work. Jean telekinetically placed the visor on Scott's eyes and said "Now!", and he shot, blasting Sabretooth through the wall and crashed into a boat anchored off Liberty Island as Wolverine released the others.
He asked Cyclops if he could blast the machine, but Scott said that he would kill Rogue. Cyclops asked Storm if she could lift him up, but she said that she could not control it like that – he could fly right over the torch. Logan told her to levitate him – if he does not make it, at least Cyclops could still blast it. Cyclops agreed and ordered Jean to try to steady Logan with her telekinesis. With combined efforts, the two managed to direct Logan to the top of the machine. The energy field started to form, and Wolverine jumped inside. He tried to slash Rogue's chains but Magneto stopped him with his power. Cyclops put his hand to his visor, but Jean asked him to wait.
The X-Men ultimately saved her before the machine could stretch Magneto's power any further as Cyclops saw a chance and decided to take it, managing to blast Magneto. Free to move, Wolverine slashed the machine, stopping the field before it mutated anyone. He cut Rogue's chains and held her in his arms, her being weakened by the machine. She wasn't moving and he noticed the white streak in her hair. He touched her cheek, attempting to give her his regenerative powers, trying to get her to heal in order to save her life. At first, it didn't seem to work and Logan began to despair, thinking Rogue to be dead. Suddenly, a multitude of wounds began to appear across his face and blood dripped out of several stab wounds. Rogue suddenly woke up and Logan fell to the ground, unconscious, with gashes all over his face and chest.
Back in the mansion, Logan awoke to find Jean standing by him. He asked her how they did, and she showed him that Xavier was lying on the surgical bench next to his. Later, she checked on Logan and found that all his wounds had healed. He woke up and she told him that what he did was very brave. He asked if it worked and she said that it did, that Rogue's fine. He began to tell her how he felt about her, but her reaction made it evident that, while Logan's heart may have belonged to her, hers belonged to Scott. Logan changed the subject, instead asking how the professor was. She told him that he was fine.
Later, the professor told Logan that there was an abandoned military compound in the Canadian Rockies close to where they found him, and that he might find some answers there. He asked Logan if he was going to say goodbye to the kids. Rogue spotted Logan leaving and rushed to talk to him. He told her that he had some things to take care of in the north. She said that she didn't want him to go, and he said that he would be back, leaving her with his dog tags, something to remember him by when he returned. Wolverine then left the mansion on Cyclops' motorcycle, heading to Alkali Lake.
Rematch with Sabretooth[]
Logan stopped to fill Cyclops' motorcycle with gas and found that Sabretooth had been following him. They fought, which ended with Logan defeating him; however, before he killed him, Logan found that Sabretooth had the same dog tags as him. The two go for drinks and started having a conversation. Stryker's men came in with the orders from Stryker and aimed at Sabretooth.
The two fought the soldiers with great teamwork, not knowing they were brothers and were eventually brought down. Waking up in a helicopter, Sabretooth threw Wolverine off, sacrificing himself in the process. Stryker later found out that the adamantium bonding did not work with Sabretooth and ordered his men to shoot Victor with an adamantium bullet, killing him, while Logan continued his search for Alkali Lake.
Stopping William Stryker[]
- "You cut me open. You took my life."
- ―Wolverine[src]
At Alkali Lake, in Canada, Wolverine was walking in the snow. He saw the military compound that Professor X was talking about. In the gate, he spotted a white wolf. He entered but found that nothing was left but the walls that once surrounded the structure. It was now abandoned and demolished to his disappointment. He then returned to the X-Mansion.
Rogue heard Cyclops's motorcycle and happily ran to the entrance to see Logan returning home. They hugged and greeted each other, and Rogue introduced Bobby to Logan as her boyfriend. They shook hands and Bobby told him to call him Iceman as he slightly froze Logan's hand. Logan then started teasing the two on how they got along physically. Bobby answered that they were still working on that.
Suddenly, Ororo came down the stairs and welcomed Logan home, saying that he had come just in time – they needed a babysitter. Jean came down after her and greeted Logan while Storm left to get the jet ready. Bobby and Rogue also left. Jean explained to Logan that she and Storm were heading to Boston and said that they wouldn't be gone long – the Professor wanted them to track down a mutant who had attacked the President. He started flirting with her and Scott walked down the staircase, asking him if he found what he was looking for. Logan answered him and Jean kissed Scott goodbye, leaving towards the Hangar Bay. With Jean gone, Logan told Scott that his bike needed gas, tossing him the keys. Scott replied that Wolverine could fill it up himself, before tossing the keys back to him.
In Cerebro, the Professor was getting ready to find the mutant attacker. Wolverine entered and the Professor welcomed him back before telling him to put out his cigar. Logan, looking for a place to put it out, finally decided to put it out on his palm, creating a wound that quickly healed. He asked Xavier if he wanted him to leave while Xavier used Cerebro. Xavier told him to stand still. Everything got dark and millions of dotted lights appeared. Xavier explained that these lights represented every living person on the world – the white lights were human, the red were the mutants – and that through Cerebro, he was connected to them and them to him. Logan changed the subject and said that he found the base in Alkali Lake, but there was nothing there. Xavier, seemingly ignoring Logan, said that the broken line represented the mutant who had attacked the President and Xavier had been having a hard time getting a lock on him. Logan asked if he could just concentrate harder and Xavier answered that he could, but it would kill the mutant they were trying to find. Just then, the mutant stopped running and his voice was heard praying in German. Xavier left Cerebro and Logan asked him to read his mind again. Xavier said that the results would be the same as before, and that the mind was not a box that could simply be unlocked and opened. He had no doubt that Logan's amnesia, his adamantium skeleton, and the claws were all connected, but sometimes the mind needed to discover things for itself. Before wheeling out, he asked Logan to watch over the kids that night as he and Scott went to visit an old friend.
In the Institute, Logan was having another nightmare about his past and about what Xavier told him earlier in Cerebro and awoke, sweaty. He walked downstairs and heard the TV is on. One of the students, Jones, was sitting in front of the television and changed channels just by blinking. Jones asked him if he couldn't sleep, and Logan jokingly asked "How can you tell?", to which the kid simply answered – "'Cause you're awake." Wolverine asked him the same question, and Jones answered that he doesn't sleep. Logan then walked to the kitchen and found Bobby eating ice-cream. He opened the fridge and asked him if they had any beer, to which Bobby answered that it was a school. Wolverine asked if that was a no and Bobby said that it was. He asked if they had anything other than chocolate milk and Bobby answered that they had soda. Logan took a bottle of soda and handed it to Bobby, who softly blew ice into the bottle to cool it before Logan drank it.
Logan asked Bobby how long he had been at the mansion. Bobby answered, "A couple of years." He asked if Bobby's parents just sent him off to mutant school. He answered that they thought he was attending a prep school. Logan changed the subject to Bobby's relationship with Rogue and Bobby told him that it was hard because he wanted to be physically close to her, but couldn't be.
All of a sudden, during their conversation, Logan's acute senses picked up on intruders' footsteps. He got up and hushed Bobby. Logan left the kitchen just as a soldier sneaked in, almost shooting Bobby from behind. Logan grabbed him out in time. Siryn, a sleeping student awoken by the intruders, screamed at the sight of the soldiers and released a strong sonic scream heard throughout the school, shattering all the windows, waking up the other students, and making everyone cover their ears with their hands. The soldier in the kitchen tried firing all over the place but Bobby ducked in time. Logan went berserk and popped his claws in the soldier's chest, killing him in front of Bobby. Logan and Bobby left the kitchen and spotted some soldiers. Logan told Bobby to stay put and took out the soldiers. Logan kept taking out soldiers as Bobby ran to the elevator to go and find Rogue.
Logan found Peter Rasputin and handed him Jones, who Logan found unconscious. Peter said he could help Logan, but he told Peter to help the kids. Piotr and Jones entered the hallway and Logan surprised more soldiers. Soldiers ran in front of Iceman, Rogue, and Pyro/John, but Logan jumped at them and quickly took them out with his claws. They ran from some soldiers and entered an elevator but Logan left right before it closed to confront the soldiers.
Suddenly, Stryker's voice was heard, telling the soldiers not to shoot him yet. Stryker called him by his codename and said that the mansion was the last place he expected to find Logan in, as he hadn't seen Logan in over 15 years. Stryker, himself surprised to see Wolverine - the man he had worked with, experimented on, and severely injured decades earlier - in the mansion, revealed that he knew much about Wolverine. Logan didn't remember Stryker and asked him who he was. Before Stryker could answer, though, a thick shield of ice separated them and Rogue and Bobby called Logan over. Wanting to get answers from Stryker, he told them to go, that he would be fine, but Rogue responded, saying that they wouldn't be. Stryker drilled through the ice, but by then Logan and the kids were already heading to the garage and getting into Cyclops's car. Pyro wanted to drive but Logan drove instead. Rogue was in the passenger seat and the boys sat in the back. Logan started the car with his claws and they took off. The soldiers, meanwhile, got into the underground tunnels.
On the road, Pyro asked what just happened and Logan answered that his name was Stryker, but he couldn't remember who he was. Pyro started the CD player but instead a communicator came out. Wolverine said that they should head to Boston, since that's where Storm and Jean were going. Bobby said that his parents lived in Boston. They decided they would go to Bobby's house to seek refuge, rest, and regain their bearings. While in the car, Rogue returned Wolverine's Dog Tag, which was given to her before he left for Alkali Lake.
In the Drake residence, Bobby and the others entered and Bobby called for his family. Nobody was home and Bobby told John not to burn anything as he went to find clothes for everyone. Downstairs, Logan tried to contact Jean through Scott's communicator but it didn't work. In the kitchen, Logan took a bottle of beer from the fridge, and, sensing something near him, popped his claws at the house cat. The cat wasn't scared and started licking Logan's claws. He heard the door open and retracted his claws as Bobby's parents and brother entered and found him. The father, William Drake, asked him who he was as Bobby rushed down the stairs and introduced him as Professor Logan. He told his parents that there was something he needed to tell them.
In the Drakes' living room, Bobby finished telling his parents and brother about his mutation. Pyro was playing with his lighter. Bobby's mother, Madeline Drake, started asking her son when he first discovered he was a mutant, but, when she couldn't bring herself to say the word 'mutant', Pyro said it for her tauntingly. William Drake asked John to understand that they thought Bobby was going to a school for the gifted and Rogue told him that Bobby was gifted. Madeline told Bobby that they still loved him, but these mutant problems were complicated. Logan cut her off mid-sentence, asking, "What mutant problems?" William asked him what he was a professor of, and he answered, "Art." Rogue suggested that Bobby show his family what he could do, and Bobby froze his mother's cup of coffee, saying that he could do a lot more than that. Madeline was shocked and Pyro seemed rather amused by this whole conversation, almost mocking the parents' attitude. The demonstration was about all that Bobby's brother, Ronny, could take and he left the living room angrily. Madeline said that this was all her fault, but Pyro taunts the parents, saying that it had been discovered that males were the ones who carry the mutant gene and pass it on, so it was William's fault. Ronny, listening from upstairs, called the police.
Cyclops' communicator beeped and Logan picked it up. On the porch, Logan tells Jean that there was no one left in the Institute since the soldiers had come. Storm asked about the children and Logan answered that some of them escaped, but he wasn't sure about the rest. Jean told him that they hadn't been able to reach the Professor or Scott either. He told them that he was in Boston with Bobby Drake's family and the women head there. He told them to make it fast and hung up.
He went back inside and told the kids that they had to go now. In a hurry, they all stepped out, Logan's claws out, and found that the house was surrounded by police cars. An officer told him to drop the knives and to put his hands in the air. Logan asked what was going on and Bobby was frustrated to realize that his brother had called the police. From his bedroom window, Ronny was watching everything. On the porch, two officers broke in and told Bobby's parents to stand by the wall. Logan told the officers that this was just a misunderstanding. They ordered him again to put the knives down and he told them he couldn't. He put his hands up in front of an officer, trying to reason with him, but the frightened officer shot him in the forehead, and he dropped.
While Wolverine was unconscious, John torched Bobby's house to the point where Rogue was forced to use her powers to stop him. The fire all around them stopped and he fell to his knees. Bobby watched as the wound on Logan's forehead healed and the bullet came out. Just then, the Blackbird landed in the yard and the mutants walked to it as none of the officers dared to shoot them.
On the jet, the four mutants sat down. Wolverine, not recognizing a mutant on the jet, asked who the new guy was. Kurt Wagner/Nightcrawler answered and told him that in the Munich circus he had been known as the incredible Nightcrawler. They took off in a hurry, as Bobby was still shocked and sad at his parents' and brother's reactions.
On the jet, Jean told Wolverine that they were close to the mansion. Just then, though, Storm detected two signals approaching fast. Two small military jets were tailing them and ordered them to descend in 10 seconds. Logan blamed John for the fact that they were angry. The jets gave their orders again and when Storm doesn't comply, they prepare to fire. Storm tried to manoeuvre and get away and her eyes began to glow white. The sky turned dark and small tornadoes appeared in the air. It worked with one of the jet and it dropped but the other one had managed to fire two torpedoes before the pilot jumped with his parachute. Storm stopped her power, but then spotted the torpedoes. This time it was Jean's turn to use her power, with her eyes glowing orange, and she got one of the torpedoes off track with her telekinesis. She couldn't get the other one in time, though, and it hit them, blowing a hole in the jet as they began to lose altitude. Rogue, who wasn't wearing her seatbelt, screamed as she was sucked through the hole created by the torpedo and fell out of jet. Bobby and Logan screamed, but it was Kurt who saved her, teleporting next to her, grabbing her, and teleporting her back inside. Still, the jet was falling rapidly until suddenly the hole suddenly closed by itself and the jet stopped mid-air, meters from the ground. Storm asked Jean if she was responsible for that, and she said that it wasn't her. On the ground, Magneto and Mystique were laughing, with Magneto humorously saying "When will these people learn how to fly?".
That night, the mutants had set up camp. By the fire, Magneto told the X-Men that their foe was Colonel William Stryker and that he had invaded their mansion for one purpose – he wanted Cerebro, or enough of it to build one of his own. Jean said that that didn't make any sense because he would need the professor to operate it, and Magneto said that that was probably the only reason his old friend, Xavier, was still alive. Jean and Storm got worried, realizing the disaster potential, and Wolverine asked what they were so worried of. Magneto explained to him that when Cerebro was working, Charles's mind was connected to every living person on the planet – if he was forced to concentrate hard enough on a particular group, for example mutants, he could kill them all. Storm asked how Stryker knew where to find Cerebro in the first place and Magneto answered that he told him – Stryker had strong means of persuasion, even against a mutant as strong as Xavier. Jean wanted to know more about Stryker and Magneto said that he was a military scientist who had spent his whole life trying to solve "the mutant problem", and said that Wolverine had a more intimate perspective as his adamantium skeleton had been created by Stryker. Wolverine didn't understand why the professor hadn't told him, and Magneto said that Xavier had thought he was smart enough to discover it on his own – he gave him more credit than he deserved. Storm asked what he needed them for and Magneto said that Mystique had discovered plans of a base Stryker had been operating from for decades and that was where he was building the second Cerebro, but they didn't know where this base is and he believed one of them might know. Wolverine told him that the professor already tried, but Magneto said that he wasn't talking about him. He looked up to see Nightcrawler sitting on a branch above them.
A few minutes later, Jean scanned Kurt's mind and saw horrible sights, ones very similar to the ones she had seen in Wolverine's mind, including an operation. After she finished, she said that Stryker was at Alkali Lake, but Logan said that that was where the professor had sent him and that there was nothing left. Jean explained that there was nothing left on the surface – the base was underground.
Later, Logan and Jean were alone. He asked her how she was doing and she said she was worried about Scott. He told her that her power, which she had activated in the jet, was powerful, but she said that obviously it hadn't been enough. He put his hand on her but she said that she loved Scott – girls flirted with the dangerous guy (Logan), they don't take him home – they marry a good guy (Scott). He kissed her, but she stopped him after a few seconds, asking him not to make her do this, and left.
Kurt talked to Mystique and asked if it was true she was a shapeshifter. Mystique affirmed that she was a shapeshifter, but ultimately preferred remaining in her natural form when possible. Logan was looking down at his dog tag, when Jean suddenly entered and kissed him. After a few seconds of kissing her, Logan's face took on a suspicious look. He had felt the scars he caused on Mystique when he stabbed her. 'Jean' shifted back into Mystique and said to him, "No one's ever left a scar quite like you," while Logan sarcastically replied, "What do you want, an apology?". Mystique shifted a few more times to Jean, Rogue, and, finally, Ororo. Logan kicked Mystique back, angry. Mystique shifted to Stryker for a moment, then leaves.
The following morning, they all sat in the jet, where they all take their uniforms. The kids complained that they didn't get uniforms and Logan said that theirs were on order – they would arrive in a few years.
Outside in the jet, the X-Men were planning the operation using a holographic topographic map of the base. They saw that Stryker could easily flood the spillway if they went inside. Storm asked Nightcrawler if he could teleport them in, but he said he has to see where he was teleporting or he might end up in a wall. Wolverine offered to go, hazarding a guess that Stryker wanted him alive. Magneto said that whoever entered has to know how to operate the place, and looked at Mystique.
At Alkali Lake, Jean discovered that Stryker's base was underground. Mystique, impersonating Wolverine, infiltrated the base and tricked Stryker's troops into opening a gateway for the X-Men to enter. In the control room, Mystique watched as the doors explode. It wasn't the soldiers, though, but the mutants, and they entered. She showed them a map of the base, highlighting a large round room – Cerebro. Logan, standing apart from the others, saw Stryker on a screen. He heard the other planning to part – Storm and Nightcrawler would get the kids while Jean, Magneto, and Mystique would go to shut down Cerebro. Storm noticed that Logan was gone.
Wolverine walked down a stairway and found the room of his nightmares – what seemed to be a surgery room. In the middle, there was a green tube of liquid of some sort. On the walls were X-ray pictures of skulls and claws. Logan had another flash of past memories of himself in this room lying in the tube. He kept looking around and found a small bathtub-like pool of liquid adamantium. Next to it, there were needles and he got a flash of the operation where his skeleton had been cased adamantium. He looked at the tube and saw a flash of himself running away from it, naked, and seeing his claws for the first time. Stryker and Lady Deathstryke/Yuriko entered the room and Stryker started explaining to him about how he had to keep the adamantium hot and liquid because once it cooled, it was indestructible. Stryker then left and told Wolverine that he used to think that he was one of a kind, but he was wrong.
Logan ran after him, but Yuriko blocked his exit and tossed him across the room. He popped his claws and watched in shock as she pulled out adamantium claws of her own – five, one from each fingertip. She leaped at him, slicing him across the face, and they started fighting each other, with her having the upper hand. When she threw him at a wall and ran to him, he surprised her and brought his claws to her stomach, earning him the opportunity for a few more strikes before she could respond. She had a healing factor just as good as his own, though, and recovered quickly. Again, she tossed him across the room and stabbed him in the back several times before tossing him on an iron net platform hanging above the tube. She stood below him and stabbed him repeatedly through the net, in his back and neck until he used his claws to destroy the poles that the platform was hanged from, and it falls on her, locking her in the tube.
Wolverine was still recovering from his injuries when Lady Deathstryke suddenly jumped at him from below and stabbed him again. He spotted the needles by the adamantium and managed to grab one of them, injecting her with molten, liquefied adamantium metal. She immediately stopped moving, and, while she was impaled by Wolverine, broke free of Stryker's mind control, but there was now nothing she could do to save herself. Wolverine watched in horror as adamantium started leaking from her eyes, nose, and ears, until she fell backwards into the water tank with a thud as the metal hardened in her body. He sighed in relief.
Outside, Stryker took the cables keeping the helicopter on the ground off, but Wolverine showed up, punching him and popping his claws in his arm. Logan yelled at him for experimenting on him and stealing his life, but Stryker told him that he volunteered for the procedure willingly. Wanting answers, Logan asked Stryker who he was, but Stryker told him that he was nothing but a failed experiment, provoking Logan into digging his claws deeper into Stryker's arm. Stryker didn't want the mutant to remember the work they had done together – he had been an animal then, he was an animal now, Stryker said, he just gave him claws. Suddenly, they heard an alarm going off, then water burst out of the dam. Logan asked Stryker what was happening and Stryker told him that the spillway was about to get flooded because the pressure had overflowed. In an attempt to escape alive, Stryker said that it was too late for anyone who was inside to make it out in time and offered to take Logan with him, and he could get all the answers he wanted. Wolverine repeated Stryker's former words, saying that he was just an animal with claws – if they die, he dies. He then popped his claws in Stryker's neck and tied him to the helicopter's leg with the cable before running back in.
As the dam kept breaking, shaking the whole structure, Jean tried scanning for the only missing person – Logan. Logan was running through the halls, desperate to save his friends. After saving Cyclops and Professor X, all the mutants ran through the halls to the spillway, believing it to be their only escape. They got to the doors but Logan came out of a tunnel and popped his claws in a fuse box, closing the door before they got caught in the flood. He told them that they didn't want to go that way and water burst through the cracks. Logan led his friends through the other way out.
Outside, the water stopped leaking through the dam as it had been redirected. The mutants rushed out onto the snow. Artie fell, and Logan carried him in his arms. To their shock and horror, the helicopter was already gone, taken by Magneto. Suddenly, the jet showed up spinning uncontrollably in the air. Rogue was piloting and made an emergency landing, crashing in the snow. Both her and Bobby seemed scared to death and were breathing heavily as their friends entered the jet. Kurt teleported Xavier inside while Logan, still carrying Artie, looked at the woods and went in them instead of to the jet.
In the woods, Logan came face to face with Stryker, who was tied to a concrete wall by chains, one last time. Stryker said, "Who has the answers, Wolverine? Those people? That creature in your arms?" Looking at Artie, Wolverine put him down, dropped the dog tags Stryker fashioned for him years earlier, and informed Stryker that he would "take his chances with him," and left Stryker to die, leaving him at the mercy of the collapsing dam. As Wolverine walked away, Stryker bellowed after him, "One day! Someone will finish what I've started Wolverine! One day! One day!" Artie stuck out his blue tongue as a reply. Wolverine and Artie Maddicks were the last two people to see Stryker.
Wolverine entered the jet and handed Artie to Bobby. Jean asked him if he was okay and he said that he was now. Scott and Ororo started panicking, realizing that something was wrong and they couldn't take off. Rogue asked if anyone had seen John and Jean answered after a short telepathic scan that he had joined Magneto, to everyone's disappointment. The jet had lost power and the water burst out through the dam again, which was unable to handling the building pressure. Jean, in the back, realized she that she had to do something as she was their last hope. She looked at all her friends and left the jet without them noticing. After a few seconds, though, Xavier notices and called her name, alarming Logan and Scott. Xavier said that she was outside and Scott and Logan rushed to the exit. Jean telekinetically closed the door, keeping them inside, and activated the jet. Scott yelled at Ororo not to take off, but Jean does it for her anyway.
Jean used one hand to keep the water from drowning the jet and the other to free the jet's leg from the snow. Scott watched in misery and Logan ordered Kurt to get her, but Kurt said that she wasn't letting him. As her last words of goodbye, Jean used her telepathy to speak through Xavier's mouth, saying she that she knew what she was doing – this was the only way. Scott begged her not to do this but she said goodbye. Her body and eyes glowed orange as she manages to release the jet's leg and lift it into the air. She released her telekinetic grip, letting the water drown her and everybody grieved for her. Scott fell, crying, onto Logan. Everybody was overwhelmed, their throats choking with sorrow. The jet flew above what was now a large lake.
In Washington, Professor X had frozen everyone in President McKenna's office and the X-Men infiltrate it right before the president was about to make a presidential address. The sky turned dark and a bolt of lightning struck, lighting up the room to reveal the mutants standing in front of the president with Storm's eyes glowing white. The president was scared to see his attacker, Nightcrawler, among them. Professor X greeted the president and calmed him down, saying that they wouldn't harm anyone. The president asked who they were and Xavier answered that they were mutants, and his name was Charles Xavier. Rogue put some documents down on the president's desk, and Xavier explained that they had been taken from the private office of William Stryker. The president asked how they got it, and the professor answered that he knew a little girl who could walk through walls. The president, after looking through the documents, said that he had never seen this information and Xavier responded, saying that he knew that. The president said that he didn't respond well to threats and Xavier said that this was not a threat – this was an opportunity. There were forces in this world, he said, both human and mutant alike, who believed that a war was coming. As he could see from the files, some had already tried to start one, and there had been casualties – losses, on both sides. He ended by telling the president that what he was about to tell the world in the presidential address was true: this was an important moment – a moment to repeat the mistakes of the past or to work together for a better future. Mutants were there to stay – the next move was his. Logan said that they would be watching as a bolt of lightning brightens all their faces and they disappear. All the lights turn on again. The president was silent, not sure what to tell the cameras.
In Xavier's study, Scott was looking out the window. Xavier said that even when Jean was a student, she was hesitant about her powers, always looking to others, fearing that in some way, she had been left behind. Scott asked in a choked voice if they could have done more to save her, and Xavier said that in the past, she may have let them. Logan couldn't understand why she left the plane and Xavier said that she made a choice. Students walked into the classroom, including Artie, Jones, Bobby, Moonstar, and Jubilee. As Logan and Scot leave the room, Logan told Scott that Jean did make a choice – it was Scott, referring to her and Scott's romantic relationship and her rejection of Logan. Scott walked away, evidently not finding much comfort in what Logan had said.

Some time later, some of the X-Men and the students were fighting in an apocalyptic battle. Enemy fire blasted buildings around them, and everything was in flames. The students were running through the chaos and Storm flew through the air, avoiding getting hit. Rogue and Colossus were about to get hit by a huge flying rock but Peter turned to steel and stood in its way, sending the rock flying at Wolverine's direction, hitting him in the head. Logan simply healed himself and looked at his students in disappointment – the world was turning to hell and they were pretty much sitting around. He called to them to follow him and they run after him.
Logan nonchalantly used a burning log to flame his cigar just as Ororo rushed to him in a panic, telling him that the students were getting killed out there. He agreed, saying that they weren't ready. Ororo pushed him away at the last moment before getting blasted themselves, and he got annoyed that he had lost his last cigar. They realized that the enemy was flying straight at them at high speeds from the sky, and Logan gave up on his students. He popped his claws and called to Colossus, telling him to throw him at the enemy. Colossus turned to steel again and tossed Wolverine at the enemy despite Storm's objections. A big clash was heard and a destroyed Sentinel head fell from the sky with Logan on it. The enemy disengaged and Wolverine dismissed the class. The Danger Room returned to normal as Logan complimented Peter on his throw.
As they exited the Danger Room, Storm angrily told Wolverine that he couldn't just change the rules – she was trying to teach them something. Logan defended himself, saying that he taught them something, but Ororo stated that it was meant to be a defensive exercise. He answered that the best defense was a good offense – or was it the other way around? She told him that it wasn't a game, but he tells her to go to Scott if she had a problem.
In the hallway, Scott walked past Logan. Wolverine told Cyclops that they were waiting for him downstairs but Cyclops never showed up. Scott asked why he cared, and Logan answered that he had had to cover for him. Scott said that he hadn't asked him to, but Wolverine told him that the professor did. Cyclops tried to brush Logan off and walk away, but Logan helf him and said he knew how Scott felt about Jean's death, but maybe it was time for them to move on. Scott just walked away, telling Logan that not everybody could heal as fast as him.
Later, when Hank McCoy had arrived at the X-Mansion and reunited with Storm and Professor X, Logan walked in and asked, "Who's the furball?" Hank introduced himself as the Secretary of Mutant Affairs, and Logan sarcastically complimented him on his suit. Xavier introduced Logan to Hank but Beast had already heard of Wolverine.
Storm interrupted and said that Magneto would definitely come to get Mystique, but Beast said that Magneto was not the problem – at least not the most pressing one. He told the X-Men that a major pharmaceutical company had developed a mutant antibody – a way to suppress the mutant X-gene, permanently. They were calling it a "cure." For a moment, everybody was quiet, taking in the news, until Storm brole the silence, saying that that was ridiculous – they couldn't "cure" being a mutant – and since when had they become a disease? Xavier stopped her, sensing that the company was announcing it now.
In the other room, Storm asked, "Who would want this cure? What kind of coward will take it just to fit in?" Beast asked if it was cowardice to save oneself from persecution, reminding her that not all of them could fit in so easily. Wolverine suggested that the government helped cook this up but Beast assured him that the government had nothing to do with it. Logan argued that he had heard that before and Hank angrily told him he had been fighting for mutant rights since before Logan had claws. Rogue walked in abruptly and interrupted their argument, asking if it was true that they could cure them. Xavier admitted that it appeared to be true, but Storm refused to accept it, saying that they couldn't cure them because there was nothing to cure. There was nothing wrong with Rogue, or any of them for that matter.
In Xavier's School, the professor sensed Cyclops' distress. Telepathically, Scott's name was heard all over the school. Something iswas clearly horribly wrong. Wolverine and Storm ran through the halls to Xavier's office, not knowing what just happened. They burst through the door and asked if he was okay and he told them to get to Alkali Lake.
Back in Alkali Lake a short while later, the Blackbird descended into the heavy fog and lands. Wolverine and Storm stepped out carefully and started walking around, though none of them really wanted to be there. Logan said that he couldn't see a damn thing, but Ororo said that she could take care of that. Her eyes began to glow white and the thick fog faded away. In front of their eyes, the two X-Men were shocked to see small rocks, leaves, and drops of water floating around in the air. They split up to explore and Logan found something else: a pair of glasses floating mid-air. He grabbed them and realized that it was Scott's ruby glasses, but before he could do anything else, Ororo's scream caught his attention and he rushed to her. He found Storm sitting on the ground, near Jean Grey's still-alive body.
Later in the school's infirmary, Logan and Professor X were at Jean's side. Xavier told Logan that the sheer mass of the water that had collapsed on top of Jean should have obliterated her completely. The only explanation of her survival was that her powers wrapped her up in a cocoon of telekinetic energy. Logan asked if she would be okay and Xavier said that Jean Grey was the only Class 5 mutant he had ever encountered – her potential was practically limitless. Her mutation was seeded in the unconscious part of her mind, posing a danger. When she was a girl, Xavier had built several psychic barriers in her mind to isolate her powers from her conscious mind, and as a result, Jean had developed a dual personality: the conscious Jean, whose powers were always in her control, and the dormant side, a personality that came to call itself "The Phoenix," a purely instinctual creature.
Taking this in, Wolverine asked Xavier if Jean knew all this. Xavier answered that it was unclear how much she knew, but far more critical is whether the woman in front of them was the Jean Grey they know or the Phoenix, furiously struggling to be free. Logan said she looks pretty peaceful to him, but Xavier said that that was because he was keeping her that way, trying to restore the psychic blocks to cage the beast again.
Thinking that this was too much, Logan angrily asked the professor what he had done to Jean – "We are talking about a person's mind here!" Xavier asked Wolverine to understand that Jean had to be controlled, but Logan told him that sometimes when you cage the beast, the beast gets angry. The professor told Logan he had no idea what Jean was capable of, but Logan corrected him, saying that he had no idea what the professor was capable of. Xavier explained that he had a terrible choice to make and that he had chosen the lesser of two evils. Logan answered that it sounded to him like Jean had no choice at all. Charles gave up and said that he didn't have to explain himself – least of all to Wolverine – and continued to work on Jean's mind. Angry, Logan walked out.
In the school's infirmary, Logan stood at Jean's side. Some sort of mental helmet was attached to her head, reading her brain waves. He touched her shoulder softly and she suddenly moved her hand sharply and grabbed his hand. She removed the helmet telekinetically and opened her eyes slowly. He called her name and welcomed her back and she commented that they were where they first met – only he was in her place and she was in his. Logan asked if she was okay and she said that she was more than okay. Jean slowly sat up and removed all medical instruments from herself.
Jean smiled and told Logan he was making her blush and he asked if she was reading his thoughts. She sat up on the table and leaned closer to him, telling him that it was okay. They then started kissing. Jean did not appear to be quite her normal self, and her face took on a very forceful expression. Several open wounds started appearing on Logan's body out of nowhere. Logan was obviously in great pain, but Jean scratched his arm painfully, which causes a large gash. Worried, Logan stopped and said, "Wait." Jean's forceful expression did not leave, and she does not tone it down. It was obvious now that Jean was causing the gashes to appear all over Logan's body with her telekinetic powers. Logan jumped off the table, telling Jean that this wasn't her, but she sat up and says it was. Logan was now thoroughly concerned. He backed away from her and suggested she take it easy, saying the Professor had said she might be a little different.
Hearing Xavier's name, Jean turned cold and sarcastically said the professor would know, suggesting he was in their heads all the time. She told Logan that Xavier had tamed him, but Logan realized that the professor was right and that the woman in front of him was not the Jean he knew. Now very worried about Cyclops' safety, Logan asked Jean, "Where's Scott?"
For a moment, Jean snapped back to her usual self, asking Logan where she was. Logan told her she was in the mansion and said he needs to know what happened to Scott. Confused, Jean remained silent and just looked around the room. Logan held out Scott's glasses and repeated the question. Seeing the glasses, Jean started to remember how she had come out of the water earlier and saw Scott. She closed her eyes, and, suddenly, the room began to shake and the glasses broke to pieces in Logan's hand.
Jean's face remained confused, with dazed stare, as the entire room shook violently. Logan grabbed Jean and told her to stay with him and talk to him. He yelled at her to look at him and focus, but she closes her eyes, her mind tortured by the personality struggle in her head. She then cried and begged Logan to kill her before she killed someone else, but he didn't want to hear it. He told her they could help her – the professor could fix it; he could help. This suggestion made Jean snap back to her previous state and she says that she didn't want to fix it, tossing Logan at the wall forcefully. With Wolverine unconscious, the Phoenix got up from the table, tore the massive, steel doors open telekinetically, and walked out.
Storm and Professor X rushed in to find Wolverine still unconscious on the floor. Ororo woke Logan and asked him what happened, and he asks where Jean was. Worried that his greatest fear had come true, Xavier asked Logan what he had done. Logan told them that he thought Jean killed Scott, but Storm said that that was not possible. Furious, Xavier told Logan that he warned him and tried to scan for Jean telepathically. He found that she had left the mansion and was trying to block his thoughts. "She's so strong," he tells them, "It may be too late."
Not long later, outside Grey residence, a car stopped. Out of it stepped the three X-Men, and Xavier told Logan and Ororo to wait for him outside – he needed to see Jean alone. Magneto showed up in front of them and told Charles he was right – this one was special. Wolverine asked Erik what he was doing there, and Magneto answered, "Same as the professor – visiting an old friend." Xavier told Erik that he didn't want trouble there, and Erik answered that neither did he. Magneto offered to go inside, and the two continued towards the house.
Outside, the X-Men and the Brotherhood watched as the white gate shut close. Logan said that he was going in, but Ororo stopped him, reminding him the professor had told them to wait outside.
Hearing the noise from outside, Logan decided that that was it and popped his claws, ready to fight his way in through the Brotherhood. Juggernaut responded by putting his helmet on and the two of them ran straight at each other. Storm used her wind powers to fly up to the sky, also preparing to battle. Juggernaut easily gained the upper hand, smashing Wolverine into the ground. He proceeded to grab Logan and toss him into the house through the front window. Logan landed on the dining table, smashing it to pieces.
Juggernaut kept hitting and kicking Wolverine, tossing him around through the house, wrecking everything in his way. Juggernaut and Callisto continued to make quick work of the X-Men, ruining the house and smashing the walls. For a second, Wolverine managed to slash Juggernaut with his claws and distract him, but it didn't help much.
Wolverine started using his claws to move around, sticking them into the ceiling and pulling himself towards the living room, struggling with Jean's telekinesis keeping him glued to the ceiling. He managed to get to the door and open it, arriving just in time to see Charles Xavier's whole body start to move as if his very skin was blowing in the wind like waves. Logan and Erik watched helplessly and in disbelief from opposite sides as Jean Grey used her powers on her former mentor.
Suddenly, between all of the mess and noise and objects flying around, there was a moment of brief silent felt only by Jean and Xavier – as if time was moving in slow motion just for the two of them. Knowing that these were probably his last words, Charles Xavier smiled and told Jean not to let it control her. Then, in a second, the unbelievable happens – in front of Wolverine and Magneto's astonished eyes, Professor Charles Xavier's body blew up and vanished into thin air.
After Magneto and Jean leave, Logan and Ororo ran into what used to be the living room but find only an empty wheelchair. They looked at each other with tears in their eyes and breathing heavily, realizing that their beloved mentor was gone. Logan dropped to his knees, helpless, yelling "No!" Ororo broke down in tears and fell on his back, hugging him. The two powerful X-Men were left alone in the wrecked house in front of an empty wheelchair, sobbing.
The day after in Xavier's mansion, the wheelchair was resting in Xavier's study, orphaned of its owner. Outside on the front yard, Ororo Munroe was eulogizing Charles Xavier in a memorial service in front of all his students: "We live in an age of darkness," she said, "a world full of fear, hate and intolerance. But in every age, there are those who fight against it. Charles Xavier was born into a world divided, a world he tried to heal – a mission he never saw accomplished. It seems the destiny of great men to see their goals unfulfilled."
In the crowd sat Marie D'Ancanto, Bobby Drake, Kitty Pryde, Peter Rasputin, Hank McCoy, and many other students and friends of Xavier's. Logan wasn't sitting with them, as he was standing and listening from afar, a loner as always. Rogue glanced at him as Ororo continued her eulogy: "Charles was more than a leader, more than a teacher, he was a friend. When we were afraid he gave us strength, and when we were alone he gave us a family. He may be gone, but his teachings live on through us, his students."
Ororo finished, saying: "Wherever we may go, we must carry on his vision, and that's a vision of a world united." Logan walked away. All other people present stood up and one walked to his memorial and put a flower on it.
Later, frustrated with her inability to touch her boyfriend, Rogue packed a bag and walked out of her room. On her way out, she was found by Logan, who asked her if she needed a lift. She said no, and he asked her where she was going. Thinking he would try to stop her, she started telling him he didn't know what it was like to be afraid of your own powers, to be afraid to get close to anybody. He told her that he did and she went on to explain she wanted to be able to touch people, to feel a hug, a handshake – a kiss.
Logan said he hopes she wasn't doing it for some boy, and she remained silent, unsure of what to say. He told her that if she wanted to go, she could go – as long as she was sure it was what she wanted. Puzzled, Rogue asked if he wasn't supposed to tell her to go upstairs and unpack, but he explained that he wasn't her father – he was her friend. He told Rogue to think about what he said and she corrected him, saying that her name was Marie. He walked away and she continued on her way out.
Back in the school, Wolverine, Storm, Beast, Iceman, and Kitty gathered to decide about the school's future. Hank thought that Professor Xavier started this school and that it was best that it end with him. He told Bobby that they would have to tell all the students they would have to go home, but Bobby said that most of them have no home to go to. He thought that they should fight for this school. Before anyone could respond, a young man walked in. It's Warren Worthington III, the mutant Angel. He apologized for coming at a bad time, but he was told that this is a safe place for mutants. Beast sadly told him it was, but Ororo corrected him and told Angel that it still was. She told Warren they would find him a room and told Hank to tell all the students that the school would stay open, much to Iceman's delight.
Outside, Logan walked to Xavier's memorial. Suddenly, he heard Jean's voice whispering his name in his head repeatedly. He jumped and turned around to see where it was coming from but it just kept getting louder and louder. He called her name and visions of the forest popped into his mind along with her voice. Logan then fell to his knees, holding his stomach in pain as Jean's voice continued to echo in his mind. Then, it stopped, and he looked up at Xavier's face sculptured in the memorial.
Immediately, he left to prepare to take off. Storm found him and asked where he was off too, telling him that Jean was gone – she wasn't coming back. Logan said that Storm didn't know that, but Ororo reminded him that Jean was the one who killed the professor. Wolverine defended her, saying that it wasn't Jean – the Jean he knew was still in there. Storm asked him why he couldn't see the truth and let Jean go, and when he didn't answer, she says it was because he loves her. She told him Jean made her choice and now it was time they make theirs. "If you are with us," she said, "then you should be with us." Having finished what she had to say, Storm left the room. Wolverine chooses not to listen, though, and left the mansion on his motorcycle.
Wolverine arrived to the forest where the Brotherhood was camped with the help of his hyper senses. He sniffed around to find the exact location. When he locked on a specific direction, he popped his claws and starts running but is stopped a few feet later by two large spikes shot at his shoulders. He fell back, wounded, but quickly got back up to his feet to see his attacker – a Brotherhood member called Spike, who seemed ready to attack again. Logan started running away, dodging the many spikes shot at him at dazzling speed. Not far away, another Brotherhood member with increased hearing heard the spikes shooting and realized something was up. Along with a few more mutants, he headed to help Spike.
Spike kept running after Logan and shooting him, not letting go of his opponent. Logan hid behind a tree to rest for a second and used his claws to get the spike out of his shoulder. He waited for Spike to make another move, then jumped out of his hiding, sending one of Spike's spikes flying back at him with the help of his claws. Spike was hit and fell down, but Logan knew that wasn't the end of it, sensing more mutants coming.
He hurried to climb the tree and wait, then jumped down and surprised the Brotherhood mutants. Before they could realize what was going on, he took them down one by one in a berserk rage, slashing them with his claws. Spike got up and threw another spike at Wolverine, but Logan blocked it with his claws and started running towards Spike, blocking more and more spikes as he ran. As they got closer to each other, they jumped at one another and both hit their target. Wolverine got up with two spikes stuck in his stomach. Still, he was victorious, as Spike was in a much worse shape, having been stabbed by his claws. Logan sheathes his claws and took out the spikes, then continued to the Brotherhood's camp.
In the camp, Magneto was giving a speech to the others. Logan arrived in the middle of it and took a cloak from one of the tents to cover himself. Magneto told his followers that the humans wished to cure them and he says to them: the mutants were the cure. Everyone cheered and Magneto went on, saying that they were the cure for the imperfect condition called Homo Sapiens. "Humans have their weapons and mutants have theirs," he said as he looked at Phoenix. They planned to strike with a vengeance and fury that this world had never witnessed and, if any mutants stood in their way, they would use the cure against them. Logan stood in the crowd and listened as Magneto detailed his plan: they would go to Alcatraz Island, take control of the cure and destroy its source, and then nothing could stop them.
Phoenix, standing behind Magneto, spotted Wolverine in the crowd and he noticed that she saw him. She walked aside and he did the same, getting away from the camp. He saw her walking away and called her name. She looked at him but doesn't have time to say a word as Magneto arrived and tossed Logan into a large tree, injuring him. Magneto told Logan that he could sense the smell of adamantium a mile away.
Logan said that he didn't come to fight Magneto – he came for Jean. Erik asked if Wolverine thought he was keeping Jean against her will, and when Logan didn't answer, Erik told him that Jean/Phoenix was there because she wanted to be. He held Wolverine in the air with his powers and Logan told him he didn't know what he was dealing with. Magneto answered that he knew full well – he saw what she had done to Charles. Wolverine said that he wasn't leaving without Jean, but Magneto thought otherwise and used his powers to send Logan flying far away. Wolverine eventually hit a tall tree and fell to the ground, beaten and injured.
Back in the school, Wolverine ran in after his encounter with Magneto and called for Storm hysterically. He found her, and she asked him what he was doing back there. He told her that he needed help – he had found Jean with Magneto and they were on the move, and he knew where they were going. Beast joined them, asking Logan if he really saw Magneto. Logan told them he had, and they had to go now, before the Brotherhood attacked Alcatraz. Hank reminded him that the government had troops stationed out there, but Wolverine didn't think it was enough to stop Magneto. As they walked hurriedly to get ready, Angel overheard them and realized his father, who found the mutant 'cure', was in danger and needed help.
A few minutes later, Beast and Wolverine were ready in uniform in the mansion's tunnels. Logan told Hank that if Magneto got ahold of the cure, he would be unstoppable. Hank asked how many mutants Magneto had on his side and Logan says that he has an army. They meet up with Storm, Iceman, Kitty and Colossus, and Bobby reminded Logan that there were only six of them. Wolverine paused and told the young students that he wouldn't lie to them – they were outnumbered, they lost Scott, they lost the professor – but if they didn't fight now, everything those men stood for would die with them, and he was not going to let that happen.
Iceman nodded in agreement and Logan said that they stand together, X-Men, all of them. Bobby looked at Kitty and Peter, and they both signaled they were ready. He then turned back to Logan and told him they were in. Ready for the battle of their lives, the X-Men walked towards the Blackbird. On the way, Wolverine told Storm the kids were ready. She agreed, but asked him if he was ready to do what he would have to do when the time comes. Not knowing what to answer, he boarded the Blackbird and they take off, heading to San Francisco. In the back, the three kids sat in silence, scared – but ready.
The Blackbird approached the battle scene at high speed and the X-Men are amazed to see the Golden Gate Bridge bridge and what was happening – it was worse than they had ever dreamed. Callisto sensed something was coming. It was the X-Men's Blackbird landing on the roof. Lightning fell on the battle scene as Storm descended from the sky. Next, Beast jumped from the roof and landed like a true animal. Iceman and Kitty jumped together, phasing into the ground to avoid getting squashed and then phasing right back up. Colossus jumped down too, his metal form protecting him. Lastly, Wolverine jumped down the wall, using his claws to scratch the wall and slow down his fall. Storm landed too, and Wolverine yelled to the humans to go back inside the building and lock the doors. He then ordered the X-Men to stand together and hold a line. Instantly, the six mutants lined up in front of the Brotherhood to form a strict line of defense, ready for the battle of their lives.
On the hill, Magneto looked at the X-Men, whispering to himself that they were traitors to their own cause. Enraged, he then ordered the Brotherhood to finish them. Magneto's army immediately charged forward at the X-Men. Wolverine slashed a light pole with his claws and it dropped on the charging Brotherhood, killing some of them. The battle then begun, with Wolverine and Beast succeeding in taking down Brotherhood members rather quickly with their furious animal attacks.
Up on the hill, Magneto told Juggernaut to go inside and find the boy – and kill him. Juggernaut said that he would do it with pleasure and ran towards the building, not letting anything stand in his way. Wolverine sees him run straight through the wall and Beast realized he was going for the boy. "Not if I get there first", Kitty replied, and ran in the same direction, phasing through anything in her path.
A mutant named Starfish, who has the ability to grow back his organs, attacked Wolverine. Logan tried to slash him like he did with all other mutants, but it was no use as the mutant quickly grew back his slashed arms every time and would hit Wolverine when he wasn't ready. Having had enough, Logan kicked the mutant is the groin and he finally fell down. "Grow those back," Logan said, smirking, as he moved on to his next opponent.
Beast and Wolverine both went into a berserk rage and took down Brotherhood members in large numbers. Logan told Beast that he thought Hank was a diplomat. Hank explained, saying, "There comes a time when all men must-" He stops mid-sentence to beat up some more mutants and just yells to Logan "Oh, you get the point!".
Up on the hill, Magneto told Pyro that it was time to end this war. He used his powers to lift a car from the bridge behind them and threw it at the battle scene, with Pyro torching it along the way. The flaming car landed and exploded and everyone ran away. Wolverine yelled to the X-Men to take cover as Magneto continued on to the second attempt with another torched car. He kept on launching more and more cars, each time Pyro torching the cars halfway to make them explode.
Storm found cover behind a column but was almost hit. She continued on to a better cover along with Wolverine and the others. Near them, they see one of the cure guns. Looking at the apocalyptic view around them – the place in ruins, cars exploding all around them – the X-Men had to make a decision. Wolverine reminded Storm of what she had told him in the Danger Room session earlier – they work as a team. She, in turn, reminded him of what he had answered – the best defense was a good offense.
Logan turned to Bobby and asked him if he thought he could take down his old friend Pyro. Bobby nodded and ran out of the cover, using his ice-powers to freeze one of the flying cars in the air, and turned off the flames before it could explode.
Wolverine told Storm that he would need some cover for his next move and she understood perfectly, using her powers to create fog. Magneto and Phoenix, the only ones left on the hill, looked around to find the rest of the X-Men, but the fog kept them from finding them.
Wolverine spotted Magneto through the fog and pointed him out to Colossus. Just like in the Danger Room, Colossus grabbed Wolverine and spun him around, tossing him at Magneto. It failed, though, as Magneto saw Wolverine and used his powers to stop Logan. Logan fell to the ground and slid on his stomach, stopping right before Magneto's legs. Erik then flipped Logan on his back, telling him that he never learned. "Actually," Wolverine answered, "I do." Just then, Beast jumped at Magneto from behind and injected him with the cure they took from the gun. Magneto dropped to his knees, realizing he was now human, and fell back. Rolling on the ground, he told Jean in a shaking voice that this was what the other humans and the X-Men wanted for them.
"It's over, Jean." Logan said to his love, the last Brotherhood member left standing. The moment was broken, though, when the soldiers used the silence to shoot at her with the cure guns. Logan yelled at them not to shoot, but it was too late. Jean stopped the shots telekinetically and turned around – the fight wasn't over.
Wolverine cried "No!" as Phoenix levitated into the air and blew up all the light poles. Again, a telekinetic storm started to rage. Beast yelled for everybody to run out of the building and escape, and they all fled in panic. Kitty and Leech got out of the building and found Iceman, and together they ran away. Staring at Phoenix's madness, Erik mumbled, "What have I done?" Frightened, he then joined the others fleeing to the bridge.
Storm ran up to Wolverine, and he told her he was the only one who could stop Phoenix. He ordered her to get everyone to safety and leave, and she flew to the sky. He cried out to Jean but she doesn't respond.
Seeing the destruction around him, Logan called Jean's name again, saying he knew she was still somewhere inside of Phoenix's body. He started walking towards Phoenix but she held him back with her powers. Still, he struggled, walking slowly against her power. Only a few feet were left between then – Phoenix stood on the top of the hill, and Wolverine a little below. He struggled to climb, sticking his claws to the ground to move.
Eventually, he managed to get to her and stood in front of her. Amazed that he had fought his way through and got to her, Phoenix opened her mouth for the first time since she lay foot on Alcatraz Island, asking Logan if he'd really die for them. "No," he answered. "Not for them. For you." Hearing this, the Jean Grey part of her personality rose back for a moment, and she begged to him once again in tears to save her. He told her he loved her, and then does what he knew he had to – what she had asked him to do before in the infirmary – he popped his claws in her gut, killing the woman he loved. In her dying breath, Jean looked at him in silence and smiled – it was over. Her body fell to his arms, and he cries.
The next day, in another room, Logan watched the president on TV giving a speech in the White House: "So it is with the thanks of a grateful nation, that I introduce our new ambassador to the United Nations and a representative to the world for all United States citizens – human and mutant alike: Dr. Hank McCoy." The president then shook Hank's hand. "Way to go, furball," Logan thought to himself. He then walked out and looked at the school that he and Storm were now left in charge of.
Reunion with Ichirō Yashida[]
- "Look at me. A lot of people have tried to kill me, and I'm still here."
- ―Wolverine to Yukio[src]
Having a flashback, Logan remembered how he had saved Ichiro Yashida, the Japanese soldier, from the nuclear bombing in Nagasaki. He heard Jean's voice in his head and seemed to wake up from his nightmare. She asked him where he had been, referring to his nightmare, and, still panting from his dream, he told her, "Nagasaki." In disbelief, he sat up and as Jean gently kissed his shoulders to comfort him, he said, mostly to himself, "You're here." "Of course." she said and Logan asked if she could stay while touching her cheek. She responded, saying that he knew she couldn't, and he started apologizing for killing her and revealed that he had made a vow to never hurt anyone ever again. Jean whispered in his ear that it was too late, looking down, and he followed her gaze to see his claws unsheathed in her stomach with blood spilling out. He started screaming, repeating, "No, Jean!" while she told him that he couldn't hide. Gasping, he actually awoke from the nightmare back to reality in 2013.
He was lying down in the cave in the side of a mountain in the Canadian wilderness where he lived, isolated, having left the X-Men over the guilt of Jean's death. The only possessions he had were photos, including one of Jean, a radio, and a few other trinkets. He had also regained the memories he lost in 1979. He trekked through the forest to the nearby town for necessary supplies. While walking, he came across a bear who was headed in the same direction he was. They acknowledged each other and the bear did not attack him. Logan walked through town into a store to buy supplies and spotted a group of men buying hunting materials.
Later that night, in his cave, Logan heard a gunshot from the woods and a man's scream. Going to investigate, he found a camp set up in the forest and a bear's paw print in the ground near the camp. Walking around the campsite, he finds the bear that he had seen earlier that day lying on the floor, wounded and dying slowly with an arrow in its side. Deciding to end its pain for it, he stabbed the bear with his claws, killing it swiftly.
He walked to the town and into a bar where one of the men he had seen in the store with hunting weapons was telling a story about how a bear had killed the other men that were there with him, phrasing the story as if the bear had attacked ruthlessly and he had been lucky to survive. Walking towards the man, Logan pretended to want to buy him a drink but, when he got close enough, stabbed him through the hand with the same arrow he had found in the bear. He pointed out that the arrow had been poisoned, which was illegal. One of the other men tried to attack him, but Logan easily knocked him back. He then berated the man for letting the bear die slowly and painfully and for using the illegal poisoned arrow, which had made the bear go crazy and attack the others.
The man broke a bottle over Logan's head and Logan popped his claws, ready to fight, but, suddenly, a Japanese girl, Yukio, who had been following him, stopped him, saying they would die soon anyway. The men prepared to attack them but Yukio demonstrated her ability to fight with a sword and successfully intimidated the men so that they wouldn't follow them. She told Logan to follow her to her car, which was parked behind the bar.
Logan got into her car and, while she was driving, asked who she was. Yukio introduced herself, saying that she worked for 'Master Yashida', the Japanese soldier Logan had saved during Nagasaki. She had been tasked with giving him the sword Yashida had promised to give Logan and to bring him to Japan to meet Yashida so that Yashida could thank him in person, since he was dying. At first, Logan refused, saying that he wasn't going all the way to Japan to say goodbye to someone and that he was a different person now. After Yukio insisted that he was, saying that he was a soldier and she knew he was in pain, which was evident from his recurring nightmares, and seeing police cars drive past them to the bar, Logan agreed to go to Japan but only for one day.
On the plane, Logan's fear of flying once again presented itself. Yukio revealed that she was a mutant who could see into the future. Once in Japan, as they were driving to Yashida's residency, Logan sees billboards everywhere with the symbol of Yashida Corporation. Yukio told Logan that there had been many attempts on Yashida's life recently by the Yakuza. While waiting to meet Yashida, Logan saw Shingen, Yashida's son, training, and commented on how impressive his fighting was.
Through a slightly opening in the door to the medical room where Yashida was lying, Logan and Yukio see a young woman holding Yashida's hand and talking frantically to him. Yukio told Logan that that woman was Mariko Yashida, Yashida's granddaughter. Crying, she exited the room, walking past Logan and Yukio but Yukio followed her, trying to find out what was wrong. Glancing at Logan, Mariko didn't tell Yukio anything.
After he got cleaned up, Logan walked into the room where Yashida was and passed a female blonde doctor, then met Yashida. Looking around the room, Logan saw two bottles filled with a blue liquid with a strange bug inside each bottle. He glanced at the live X-rays of Yashida's heart and saw two of the same bugs crawling around in his chest. Then, Yashida offered to repay Logan for saving his life with something bizarre — an offer to take his immortality away from him and give it instead to Yashida himself, who didn't want to die. Shocked, Logan refused the offer. As he walked out, Yashida said to him to that Mariko needed to be protected. Logan and Yukio then saw Shingen slap Mariko and Mariko try to jump off a nearby cliff. Logan grabbed her just in time.
Later, Yukio told Logan that Yashida found her on a past trip and had taken her in to be Mariko's friend and protector. That night, Logan dreamed about Jean again and they started kissing, but it was revealed to be Viper, the blonde female doctor he had seen in Yashida's room, who was really kissing him, and she injected something into his body through his mouth. After waking up in a fright, he heard people shouting and Yukio came into his room to inform him of Yashida's death, and that she hadn't foreseen it.
The next morning, Logan attended Yashida's funeral, where he sees Viper, Kenuichio Harada, who has dedicated his life to protecting Mariko, watching them from the top of the building, and Noburo, Mariko's fiance. He had a short conversation with Noburo where Noburo told him to go back to Canada. Later on in the funeral, while people were paying their respects, he noticed strange tattoos on the funeral staff escorting Mariko. He ran to her, interrupting the funeral and grabbed her arm, insisting that something wasn't right. However, she hasn't realized this yet and tells him to let her go. He does, but doesn't back off as she walks away. Still trying to figure out what was wrong, Logan approaches another staff member slowly while someone shouted at him to back away, and when he got too close, the staff took out a shotgun from under his robes and shot Logan, creating chaos.
Something was wrong as Logan wasn't able to recover from the shot as quickly as he used to. In a dazed state, he watches Mariko being snatched away before snapping out off it and following her. He slashed through the Yakuza members to get to her as Yukio tried to follow from behind, but was eventually stopped and separated from them by Shingen. While he was fighting, Viper filmed him and, when confronted by an assassin, spat venom on the assassin's face and killed him. With every shot, Logan becomes more injured and weak, rendering him unable to fight at his full power. As he made his way through to Mariko, Harada helped him by shooting down people who were following him with arrows from the surrounding rooftops.
Having reached Mariko, they ran through the city and across a busy road, with the cars taking out some of their followers. Mariko fought off a couple of Yakuza members, displaying her fighting ability. Harada continued to follow and defend them and, as Logan and Mariko run through different stores, he was eventually able to take down all of their attackers with arrows.
While they ran, Mariko commented that Logan was bleeding and needed help. She thanked him for helping her but, having reached a train station with all their attackers gone, Mariko insisted that she could make her own way from there. Doubtful, Logan followed her onto a bullet train with more Yakuza members behind him.
Meanwhile, Noburo talked to reporters at the funeral and said that this Yakuza attack was a retaliation to his efforts to track down organized crime. Shingen was told that Mariko had escaped with Logan and took Yukio aside to forcefully ask her where Logan was, and then she responded, "Protecting your daughter," he told her that she was nothing more than a toy doll, and with Mariko grown up, their family had no more need for her.
Back on the train, Logan asked Mariko where they were going, and Mariko tells him that at the end of the line, their family had a home in the South where no one would look for her. Logan told her that that wasn't going to work and they would find her, but Mariko ignored him. He checked his gunshot wounds, which weren't healing, and headed to the bathroom to fix himself up.
While in the bathroom, he ran into more Yakuza members and started fighting them. He got shot numerous times and they ended up on the roof of the train. With one more assassin to kill, they faced each other on the top of the train. Logan, who was facing the front, saw that there was a sign coming and feinted a jump, convincing the assassin that there was a lower sign heading towards them and made the assassin jump, which led to him being knocked out by the higher sign.
Looking back, Logan saw one more assassin who was looking through the sunroof at Mariko sitting in her seat. Having defeated the killers, Logan ran into the train and told Mariko that they were getting off as the train stopped at a station. He told Mariko that they needed to get someplace safe and off the street but Mariko kept asking him how he knew they were after her and she kept saying that she didn't understand. She guided him through the town and they ended up at a hotel that was eight blocks away from the "nice part of town." Inside, Mariko told him that this was a love hotel, but he didn't care. She talked with the hotel staff and got them a space-themed room. Logan kept watch over their room in the rain as she slept, but he hallucinated Jean and, bleeding out from his wounds, passed out, alerting Mariko.
He awakened to find that Mariko had gotten the motel owner's grandson, a veterinarian, attending to his wounds. He reached out his hand to thank him, but the grandson backed away and Mariko told him that, while unconscious, he had cut him a few times. He asked her who the blonde doctor, Viper, was, and she told him that Yashida had met her when he went to America the previous year for treatment. Logan told her that Viper had taken his healing from him.
Meanwhile, Viper walked through a busy alleyway and, when bothered by a Japanese business man who thought she was a prostitute, killed him. She went on her way to meet Harada and he berated her for keeping him waiting for two hours, calling her disrespectful and telling her that he could kill her if he wanted. Viper said that he could not and blew poison into his mouth, causing welts on his face. It was her turn to threaten him, scolding him for not being able to bring her Logan when she had done her part and weakened him. She blew into his face again, healing him, and told him it was her he should respect and to find Logan and Mariko before the Yakuza did.
The next day, Logan and Mariko got off a bus at the place near where Logan and saved Yashida all those years ago. That evening, Mariko told Logan that Harada used to be her boyfriend and that they had been village champions at one point, him with the bow and her with knives. They had wanted to get married, but Yashida stopped them since they hadn't been even 15 years old. Mariko and Logan then ate their dinner, and Logan stuck his chopsticks upright in his food but Mariko took them out and placed them next to his bowl, telling him that chopsticks upright resembled incense at a funeral and were a bad omen.
He questioned her about why she had tried to kill herself that night, why Shingen had slapped her, and what Yashida had told her that night. Hesitantly, she told him that it was because Yashida had written in his will to hand over the company to her instead of her father, Shingen. She said that she didn't understand why Yashida did it and Logan said that that was precisely why he had done it. He asked Mariko why she was engaged to Noburo since he seemed like "an asshole" and she told him that it was an arranged marriage by her father, because it gave Shingen "better access to the political theatre." She said that to disobey her father would be to dishonor him and she didn't expect Logan to understand, and then reached over to, again, put his chopsticks that he had stuck upright in his food back beside his bowl.
Back in Yashida's house, Shingen berates the police force for not being able to find Mariko. He talks with Noburo, who says that he was sending his men to the South to look for Mariko, since they found bodies of the Yakuza there.
Logan tried shaving but ended up cutting himself and he touched the cut tenderly, realizing, as the cut did not quickly heal, that he was mortal. Meanwhile, Yukio and Mariko talked on the phone and Yukio said that the Yakuza must have had someone on the inside. Yukio told Mariko that she was coming to them, but Mariko pleaded with her to give them a few days since Yukio would be followed. There was a knock on the door and an old woman told Mariko that a tree had fallen on the road and asked for Logan's help.
After helping the men, Logan sat down, tired. While resting, he saw the place where he had saved Yashida and had a flashback to when Yashida had given him the sword in thanks. He had held the sword in his right hand and Yashida had told him to use both hands. They then climbed out of the hole they had hidden in to survive the blast and Yashida started crying, seeing the damage to his country. Mariko said that Yashida had told her stories of him and that everything in the world would find peace eventually. She commented on how he didn't sleep well and called out in his sleep, and asked who Jean was. He avoided the question, looking out at the sea and Mariko said that they should head back as rain was coming.
They made it back to the house just as it started storming and after Logan had changed into a traditional Japanese yukata, Mariko told him that he had tied it wrongly and helped him fix it. While doing so, he told her that Yashida had called him a ronin, a samurai without a master, and that he was destined to live that way. She asked if he had been right, and when Logan said yes, she asked again if he was still right, looking up and him and hinting at a romance blossoming between them. After a moment of silence, he leaned in and kissed her and they started making out.
That night, as they lie in bed together, Logan hallucinates an image of Jean saying that everyone he loved would die and then an image of the samurai armour that had been stationed by Yashida's casket attacking him. He popped his claws, worked up, and Mariko touched his fist gently to comfort him. She told him that Kuzuri, which was a name many people had called Logan while he was in Japan, was a dangerous animal who feared nothing. Yashida had told her when she was young that Kuzuri would protect her, and asked again about Jean. Logan finally opened up and told her that Jean was dead and he had killed her along with the Kuzuri.
Yukio awoke in the middle of the night from a vision she had about Logan's death.
The next morning, Logan woke to the sound of Mariko screaming and being taken away by men. He ran after her but didn't get to her in time; however, he was able to defeat one of the men and found out that Noburo had hired them. Yukio picked him up in her car and took him to where Noburo was staying. She told him that she had a vision of him dying with his heart, not beating, in his hand. She adds that when she was five, she saw how her own parents would die and watched it happen. He tells her that people had tried to kill him before and hadn't succeeded, but she tells him that he was different now that he couldn't heal. He told her to wait in the car while he talked to Noburo but she followed him out, saying that she would be his bodyguard since he had lost his healing ability.
They walk into his apartment to find Noburo with two strippers, and Logan tells them to get out. After refusing to tell him why he had hired men to kidnap Mariko. He revealed that Shingen had promised him a large sum of money to kidnap her, since they both knew that Yashida planned to hand the company over to Mariko. Enraged, Logan thew him out of his apartment into the pool below.
The men had brought Mariko to meet Shingen, who was about to kill her when a bunch of people hired by Harada ambushed him and took Mariko away. Viper walked into Shingen's room and stabbed him with a poisoned pen and he ran out into the nearby pond. Yukio and Logan followed close behind to find Yashida's place empty, with a note with a picture of Yashida's birthplace that said to find her there. In the room that Yashida had been receiving treatment in, Logan once again saw the two bottoles filled with blue liquid, but this time empty of the bugs. He lay on the bed and activated the machine that scanned his chest to find a bug on his heart, which was presumably stopping his healing.
He sliced his own chest open, trying to get the parasite out, but Yukio begged him not to, scared that her vision of him dying with his heart in his hands would come true. He went ahead anyway, reaching into his chest. While doing so, Shingen walked into the room with a sword and a samurai set of armour on and walked towards Logan.
Since Wolverine was in a vulnerable position, Yukio was left to defend him. Logan gets the parasite out but flatlines, but, having had his healing ability restored, returned to life and started fighting Shingen, who was about to kill Yukio. Shingen called mutants "God's mistakes" and cut Logan with a samurai sword, but was horrified when Logan quickly healed. Logan walked away from Shingen, telling him that he had to live with the fact that he tried to kill his daughter. However, Shingen then ran at Logan who then turned around and killed him.
Mariko asked Harada why he had brought her to the facility that Yashida Corporation was building at his birthplace, and Viper walked in. Scared, Mariko took a step back but Harada told her to relax since she also worked for the House of Yashida. Viper then stabbed Mariko in the neck with her fingernail that contained poison, causing her to pass out.
After waking up, Mariko walked towards Viper and told Viper that she was now the head of the family, which meant that Viper should take commands from her. However, Viper spins the ledge they are standing around to face a machine that looked like a samurai, asking Mariko why she thought Yashida had chosen her to take over the corporation — because she was strong, or weak?
Logan and Yukio arrived at the Yashida Research Center in northern Japan and Logan went in to find Mariko. He was stopped by Harada, who thanked him for his protection of Mariko but said that he had to stop there. The Black Clan, who had protected the House of Yashida for 700 years, then took down Logan with poisoned arrows.
Logan woke up trapped in a machine created by Viper. She walked in and he asked her angrily where Mariko was, but she ignored him and showed him the samurai machine, telling him that it was made of adamantium, just like him. Yukio broke into the facility. Viper continued taunting him and he eventually popped his claws, triggering the part of the machine around his wrist to move, preventing him from retracing his adamantium claws.
Mariko watched him from across the building and Harada told her to let go of her attachment to him. However, when Harada kissed her and his guard was lowered, she stabbed him with his own knife, injuring but not killing him, and ran to Logan, who was about to get his claws cut off by the Silver Samurai. As it swung its sword, Mariko ran in front of it, causing it to miss its target and break the machine that was holding Logan in place instead. As Logan and Mariko ran away, Viper chased them but was shot down by Harada, who had come to his senses. She fell down the building but didn't die.
Mariko told Logan to run but he tackled the Silver Samurai instead. He used his claws to fend it off but the Samurai used its red-hot adamantium sword to cut off his claws. This caused Logan to scream in pain as his bone had also been cut away. Left in a vulnerable position, the Samurai kicked him farther down the building. As he got up on the ledge that he lands on, he saw Viper's skin on the floor, which she had molted out of. Looking up, he sees her and she spat in his face with poison. Rendered blind for a few moments, Logan was unable to see the Samurai land near him and come at him with its sword. However, he used his remaining claws to slash the power pox of the building, turning off the lights so that he would be able to hide in the darkness while he healed from the Viper's poison. He then attacked the Samurai.
As Logan fought the Samurai, Yukio fought Viper. Logan was eventually defeated and as Logan was about to have his remaining claws slashed off by the Samurai, Harada shot it in its face, making it drop one of its red-hot sword, and some blood dripped out of the machine. Harada ran to the machine and, holding the arrow still stuck in its face, told it, "This is not the way." However, whoever was inside the machine did not listen and instead stabbed him. Meanwhile, Logan found the sword that the Samurai dropped but was unable to activate it. Remembering what Yashida had told him in the pit, he used two hands to grab it and it started heating up.
Harada begged the Samurai not to kill him, calling it "Master," but is then flung away. Logan then cuts off its head using its own sword and kicked it down the building. He jumped down with it but fell off a ledge, barely hanging on to the side of the building.
Mariko ran to Harada, who was dying, and apologized for stabbing him earlier. He then died.
As Logan tried to climb his way back to safety, the Samurai came back to life and cut off his remaining claws. He started to fall, but the Samurai grabbed his arm and started to drill into his claws, harvesting his healing ability. As it raised him by his arms to face it, Logan looked inside the armour and saw the human inside it — Yashida. Yashida told Logan that the armour was the only thing keeping him alive as he began to get younger, with Logan becoming weaker. Just as Logan was about to die, Mariko, holding Logan's claws that had been cut off, walked behind Yashida and threw one of the claws, stabbing him in the head. She called him a monster and he tried to tell her that he was her grandfather, but she simply said that she had buried her grandfather and stabbed him again, killing him.
Yukio stood behind Mariko and watched as Logan tore apart the armour keeping Yashida alive, then used his bone claws, which had grown back, to stab him and throw him off the side of the building as he said goodbye to Yashida. Logan then collapsed and had another hallucination of Jean telling him to stay with her this time, but he refused and finally healed from his trauma of her. She walked away and he told her one last time that he loved her, that he always would.
Later, Logan said goodbye to Mariko, who was now CEO of the Yashida Corporation as she asked him to stay. He refused, saying that he was a soldier and had been away for too long. He boarded a plane with Yukio, who reminded him that she was still his bodyguard. Yukio then said to Wolverine that they could go wherever they wanted to and they depart to somewhere unknown.
Two years later, in 2015, Logan is at an airport and is approached by Magneto and Charles Xavier about a new threat to wipe out all mutants. In some point between 2015 and 2023, Logan's bone claws were once again coated in adamantium, presumably with Magneto's help.
Hunted by Sentinels[]
- "What if someone's mind has a way of snapping back? What someone can heal as fast as they're being torn apart?"
- ―Wolverine[src]
Eight years later, the surviving X-men, called the Free Mutants, are living in an apocalyptic world where all mutants were being hunted down and killed, and any humans that tried to help them were also executed. This world was made possible by machines built by the government called Sentinels. The key point in gaining governmental support for the Sentinel program was when Mystique had killed Bolivar Trask, the person who had proposed the idea of Sentinels, as that event had shown the government the need for Sentinels. The Free Mutants have been surviving by hiding out in various bases and when discovered by Sentinels, Shadowcat, a mutant who can travel back through time, goes back a few days to warn their past selves about the coming attack.
Wolverine, Storm, Professor X, and Magneto arrive to find their fellow Free Mutants in China, where they planned to send Wolverine back to 1973 to stop Mystique from killing Bolivar Trask in hopes of preventing Sentinels from ever being created. Because of his healing abilities, he was the only one who could physically and mentally survive the trip back to the past. Shadowcat sent his mind to the past, back to his younger body, while his physical body remained in the present.
Days of Future Past[]
Changing the Past[]
- "In the beginning, the Sentinels were just targeting mutants. Then they began to identify the genetics in non-mutants who'd eventually have mutant children or grandchildren, and they started targeting everyone. Many of the humans tried to help us, it was a slaughter... leaving only the worst of humanity in charge. I've been in a lot of wars, I've never seen anything like this. And it all starts with her."
- ―Wolverine[src]
In 1973, Wolverine woke up in 1973 in bed next to a woman whom he had been hired to protect, and three men who worked for the woman's father entered and shot at him. Wolverine, confused, killed them and went to find Professor X.
Wolverine headed to the X-Mansion where he makes a rough encounter with Hank McCoy/Beast.. Wolverine saw Professor X and asked for his help in preventing Bolivar Trask's death, but this was not the same Charles that he knew. Charles wasn't in a wheelchair, was able to walk, but was also unable to use his powers. He had become a desolate alcoholic who had had his school closed because of the Vietnam War. He had lost his hope for mutants but after realizing that he could have a chance of seeing Mystique, who had joined Magneto, again after all these years, he reluctantly agreed to help Wolverine. They planned to break Magneto out of prison, who was there for killing President John F. Kennedy. The three first headed to Peter Maximoff/Quicksilver's house and asked him for help. At the Pentagon, Charles, Wolverine, Quicksilver, and Hank snuck into the facility and freed Erik.
While pursuing and capturing Mystique, Wolverine found William Stryker and had traumatic flashbacks. In 2023, Wolverine started violently shaking and accidentally slashed Shadowcat, who was continuously using her power on him to keep his mind in the past, in the rib with his claws. Back in 1973, he briefly forgot why he was there and who young Charles is.
Magneto lifts an entire stadium and transports it to surround the White House and puts all but one Sentinel on lookout and makes it go after Wolverine and Beast.
Having successfully altered the timeline, Wolverine awakens in the Xavier Institute in the new future at precisely the same time he was sent back in time, to find Storm, Shadowcat, Rogue, Iceman, Colossus, Beast, and to his shock, Cyclops and Jean Grey alive again. Wolverine visits Professor X and reveals he has just finished time traveling and asks what happened in the last fifty years, apparently possessing no memory of the events of the new timeline. A delighted Professor X tells him they have a lot to catch up on.
History Rewritten[]
Joining the X-Men[]
- "It's good to see you Charles. It's good to see everyone."
- ―Wolverine[src]
In 2023, the consciousness of Logan from the original timeline woke up in his body in this timeline. Upon leaving his room, he saw how friends that had been killed in the original timeline - Iceman, Rogue, Beast, Storm, Kitty Pryde, Colossus, Cyclops and Jean Grey - at the school, a sign they had succeeded and the timeline had been corrected. He walked into Professor X’s office, briefly talking to him about what happened, and told him that he needed to get caught up on the last fifty years.
Westchester Incident[]
In 2028, Charles Xavier would develop Alzheimer's and suffer a massive seizure that injured six hundred people and killed several members of the X-Men. Logan would take Charles to a place in Mexico near the U.S border. He would also ask for the assistance of Caliban to help care for Charles.
Finding Something to Die For[]
- "Charles, the world is not the same as it was."
- ―Logan to Charles Xavier[src]
In 2029, Logan is working as a Limo driver and has started going by his birth name James Howlett where he escorts all types of people from businessmen to high schoolers, hoping to save up enough money that he can buy a boat and take Charles, himself, and Caliban out to sea where they will not have to worry about Charles' seizures hurting anyone. One day, Logan is approached by Gabriela, a nurse for Transigen, who asks him to escort her and an 11-year-old girl, Laura, to a place in North Dakota called Eden.
Returning home and intent on getting Charles to safety, Logan is met by Donald Pierce once again, but knocked out by Laura, who snuck into his car on the way back. Logan gives Caliban the responsibility of dropping Pierce off on the side of the road as he gets Charles ready. However, Pierce returns with his cybernetic-enhanced enforcers, the Reavers, and Caliban is captured. Logan and Laura manage to escape them though. Later, Logan and Xavier learn through a video on Gabriela's phone that Transigen was breeding mutant children with DNA samples from several mutants for the "X-23" project, but found they were difficult to control as they grew up. Upon completion of the "X-24" project, the children were deemed unnecessary and were to be put to death. Gabriela helped several children escape from the Transigen compound before smuggling Laura across the border. Furthermore, Laura is revealed to be Logan's "daughter", as she was bred with his DNA from when he escaped from Alkali Lake in 1983.
The group decides to stay at a hotel in Oklahoma City. While there, Logan discovers that Eden doesn't exist, and is just a place referenced in one of the X-Men comic books that Laura brought with her. While Logan is out, the Reavers find their whereabouts, but Xavier suffers another seizure and freezes everyone in the hotel with a psychic blast, forcing Logan to painfully roam through the hotel. Making his way up, Logan kills the several Reavers surrounding Charles and injects Xavier with a suppressant before they leave the city, with the overall ordeal leaving hundreds injured and dozens dead. The trio is given shelter by a local family, the Munsons, after helping them round up their horses during a highway incident. When a pipe bursts on the family's property, Logan and Will Munson go to fix it where Logan drives off some harassers of the Munsons. While they are out, X-24, a feral clone of Wolverine without his own healing factor and a weaker adamantium skeleton, stabs Xavier through the chest, fatally wounding him, and slaughters Will's wife and son, and when they return, Will himself is mortally wounded. X-24 then captures Laura. Logan arrives and finds the injured Xavier, who dies shortly after.
Logan battles X-24 but is unable to overcome X-24's savagery as Caliban blows himself to let Laura and Logan escape by setting off two grenades which destroys the van he is in. Will then appears and impales X-24 on the forepart of a combine harvester with his car and then shoots X-24 in the head with a shotgun repeatedly before collapsing dead, allowing Logan and Laura to escape. After burying Xavier, an emotionally devastated Logan passes out after smashing the truck in far more rage, violence, and aggressiveness than before and wakes up in a clinic with the doctor attempting to convince him to get some treatment for his condition, but Logan refuses. Laura convinces Logan to take her to Eden and after a violent and aggressive argument, Logan gives in to show her it is not real. On the way there, Laura convinces Logan to sleep, and she drives them the rest of the way to Eden.
Logan and Laura arrive at Eden, a safe haven run by Rictor and the other Transigen test subjects who managed to escape. The children then put a weak and exhausted Logan to bed. Logan wakes up from the nightmares and Laura asks him to say that he had a nightmare and Logan ask her a question that she had nightmares and she's right that people hurt everybody. Laura had something in his shirt which it was a bullet, Logan says that it was made out of adamantium, the same kind which is put inside of them and it's probably what's killing them. Logan asks to hold this for him, which she does. The next morning, Laura and the children trim Logan's beard; when he wakes up, the children laugh at him. He walks up to the mirror and says that it's not funny. Logan then learns that the children plan to make a journey across the forest to the Canadian border and entrusts Laura to them. During their journey, the children are located and captured by the Reavers. Knowing the children need his help, Logan makes the fatal decision to use the serum left to him by Rictor to restore his healing factor which rapidly heals all his past scars and injuries but also has dangerous side effects once it wears off.
Now dying, Logan with his final breath tells Laura to not be the weapon Transigen wanted her to be, as Laura tearfully acknowledges Logan as her father, before Logan remarks at the feeling of death, before he dies in her arms. Laura and the children mourn his death, they bury him In Canada, his place of birth. Laura uses lines from the movie "Shane" on Logan's grave "A man has to be what he is, Joey. Can't break the mold. There's no living with the killing. There's no going back. Right or wrong, it's a brand. A Brand that sticks. Now you run on home to your mother... you tell her everything's alright. There are no more guns in the valley." And when she's done, Rictor tells the children that they gotta keep moving as they continue forward where they'll all be safe before Laura joins Rictor and the children she tearfully adjusts the cross on his grave, and places it on its side creating an "X" to honor her father as an X-Man and the Wolverine. His sacrifice saved the mutant race, meaning that mutants will be born again in the future.
News from Deadpool[]
The modern day Deadpool travelled back in time to the Three Mile Island Incident, where he killed the alternate Deadpool that William Stryker created, telling Wolverine to return back to the fray should he ask despite his future retirement, leaving the confused Wolverine to agree.
Legacy[]
Deadpool later learned from the Time Variance Authority that Wolverine was the "anchor being" of his timeline. With Wolverine dead, their timeline was dying. Deadpool attempted to bring back the original Wolverine by digging up his corpse, only to discover to his rage that it had been fully decomposed down to an adamantium skeleton. Deadpool used parts of Wolverine's corpse, including his claws, to fight off and massacre attacking agents from the Time Variance Authority. As a result of his world's Wolverine being permanently deceased, Deadpool sought out an alternate version of Wolverine to replace the one who had died.
Powers And Abilities[]
Weaknesses[]
Equipment[]
- Adamantium Skeleton: Wolverine's entire skeletal system is molecularity infused with the impenetrable and indestructible metal alloy adamantium. This makes him totally indestructible, but also further augments the physical might of his musculature. This, coupled with his regenerative healing factor, makes him fully invulnerable, as he was the only one capable of walking through the full power of the omnipotent and all-powerful Phoenix Force.
- "Japanese sword require two hands.""Like that?""That's it.""It's beautiful, Yashida. But I can't take it.""Please. Thank you.""Keep it safe. Keep it safe for me. Someday, I'll come get it."
- ―Ichirō Yashida and Logan[src]
- Danzan: Logan saved Ichirō Yashida from the bombing of Nagasaki. In return for his actions, Yashida wanted to give Logan his sword, Danzan, which translates to "separator" in Japanese. Logan refused, but stated that he would one day return for it. Many years later, Yukio wielded the sword when she went to find Logan and demonstrated its abilities in the bar. During his fight with Shingen Yashida, the latter used it against the Wolverine but its features were no match for Logan's healing abilities. It later appeared in the film Logan in Logan's hideout. The blade features the kanji "不老不死不滅," which means "never aged, never died, never destroyed."
- Mutant Growth Hormone: When Logan fainted after arriving at Eden, a safehaven run by Rictor and the other Transigen test subjects who managed to escape, the children put a weak and exhausted Logan to bed and injected small doses of the MGH to amplify his healing factor. While chasing to rescue the mutant children, Logan injected him with most of the MGH, knowing the side effects include increased aggression and the potential death of the user. After realizing the serum started to wear off, Logan realize that his regenerative healing factor stopped working efficiently. (Logan timeline only)
Former[]
Logan, as a soldier, wielded many firearms in battle, and therefore possesses skill in using them.
- Smith & Wesson Model 386: Logan prepared to use this revolver with an adamantium bullet to commit suicide. After he used it to shoot Zander Rice in the throat and Donald Pierce in the arm, the gun ended up in the hands of Laura to kill X-24.
- Enfield Pattern 1853: During the Civil War, Logan used this rifle with a bayonet fixed onto the barrel.
- Springfield 1903: During World War I, Logan used this rifle against German soldiers.
- Mauser Gewehr 1898: During World War I, Logan disarmed a German soldier of this rifle and gave it to Victor.
- M1A1 Thompson: During World War II, Logan used this SMG when assaulting Normandy Beach.
- Colt Model 733: During the Vietnam War, Logan used this rifle.
- Zastava M70B2: Logan carried this rifle when confronting Victor and his team.
- Ruger Mini-14: Logan disarmed the Redneck leader of his rifle and broke it in half over his knee.
- Browning M2HB: Logan tore off this machine gun from the car firing at him, and used it to fire at a helicopter.

Deadpool & Wolverine[]
- His heroism throughout the franchise inspired Deadpool who claims that Logan was his idol. He later told this to an alternate Logan and helped him overcome his grief in order to join the fight against Cassandra Nova and escape the void to save Earth-10005 from collapsing.
- His actions had such a positive impact throughout his universe that even members of the TVA regard him as a great hero as Paradox revered his noble sacrifice and another agent was furious at Deadpool for desecrating Logan's grave, calling him a hero.
- It is revealed that his sacrifice allowed Laura and multiple other children to grow up and have their own lives away from Rice's men.
- While he does not really show up throughout the film as it focuses more on a younger version of him, his actions still have a big impact on the story and on how his younger counterpart changes and grows.
What Makes Him Inconsistent?[]
- He is insanely lethal and brutal towards his enemies, a trait that is never subverted and is constantly recurring throughout the franchise and he almost never shows hesitation or remorse for his kills, his past as a killer and being turned into a weapon also makes it so that he almost never shows mercy and leaves him with one of the highest kill counts out of any X-Men, with only Deadpool having more.
- He can even be lethal at times when it is not needed as shown when he nearly killed Fred to get information on Gambit despite Fred being down already, nearly killing a group of hunters who had killed a bear before Yukio stopped him, killing a group of men upon waking up in 1973, and brutally slaughtering a gang of gangsters that tried to rob him (which even Donald Pierce noted had been killed in a very horrific way).
- He is incredibly jerkish and aggressive as shown in several occasions such as his rivalry with Scott, rudely telling Charles and Erik to go f**k themselves when they introduce themselves to him, being antagonistic towards Erik's past self, mocking Charles' disability by calling him "Wheels" despite Charles' kind behavior towards and his aggressive behavior towards Laura who is not only his daughter but a young child, to the point he even yelled at her and dismissed Eden as a "f**king fantasy place".
- He can go into a blind rage during fighting at times, which happens way too often in the franchise, one such example being his rampage in the Revised Timeline in Stryker's base where he brutally slaughtered many men in completely unnecessary ways and even tried to attack the X-Men before Jean stopped him.
- He is very reckless constantly acting and attacking without thought, it was this quality that cost him his memories as he attacked Stryker head on (even when Kayla tried to warn him not to) and got shot with an adamantium bullet.
- His relationship with Scott is incredibly antagonistic, especially on Logan's side who takes every chance to tease him, steals not only his motorcycle (which he never even returned) but also his car in the second film, flirts with Jean despite being aware of her and Scott's relationship and his feelings on the matter, flipping him off with one of his claws, and even refuses to shake his hand or give him any respect.
- He is a bit of an addict as he constantly smokes and drinks, he even tried to use a fire in a car to light a cigarette during the Danger Room training session with the young mutants.
- He has multiple Kick the Dog moments, like tricking a Yakuza member into jumping so he could get hit by a bar, throwing Noburo out the window to kill him only having him survive because Logan threw him into a pool, and taking a phone charger and cigars right after Laura tried to kill the cashier to name a few. Although he technically didn’t tell her don’t steal, he still took the items without paying.

- Despite having been a soldier along with Sabretooth during the 1900's, as portrayed in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Wolverine is a civilian during X-Men: First Class and X-Men: Days of Future Past, during which the Vietnam War had been occurring. However, it is possible that they were taking a break between their various wars.
- At one point in the 1990s, Glenn Danzig was approached to play Wolverine in ad hoc committee X-Men film, because he bore an uncanny resemblance to the character, as well as being the same height as Wolverine, and very muscular. However, he had to decline, due to the fact that the shooting for the film would force him to put a halt to touring with his band for nine months.
- Russell Crowe was Bryan Singer's first choice to play Wolverine, along with Glenn Danzig, Dougray Scott, Keanu Reeves, Gary Sinise, Mel Gibson, Aaron Eckhart, Jean-Claude Van Damme, Viggo Mortensen, Edward Norton, and Bob Hoskins were considered. But he refused and turned it down, then he decided to let his friend Hugh Jackman take the role.

Although they both got tricked once in X2: X-Men United, while impersonating Jean Grey and Wolverine, they realize she's an imposter.
- While Wolverine stands rather short at 5'3" in the comics, he is rather tall in the films as Hugh Jackman is 6'2".
- Jackman revealed in an interview with the Huffington Post that his character was originally going to have a cameo in Spider-Man (2002). When he showed up in New York to film the scene, the entire plan was scrapped when the crew couldn't get access to the Wolverine costume from X-Men (2000).
- Hugh Jackman was uncredited in X-Men: First Class and X-Men: Apocalypse, as his character, Wolverine only made cameos in them.
- Wolverine and Professor X are the only two characters that have appeared in every X-Men movie to date, though Wolverine is the only one to have been portrayed by the same actor in each appearance.
- However, neither of them appears in the spin-off Deadpool films. Despite this, Hugh Jackman, Patrick Stewart, and James McAvoy were referenced to in Deadpool several times. Although they appeared as cameos, James McAvoy makes an appearance with Beast, Cyclops, Nightcrawler, Quicksilver and Storm, Patrick Stewart didn't appear in the film, but was mentioned and the latter appears in the credits of Deadpool 2 when they used archive footage from X-Men Origins: Wolverine to make him appear.
- Despite losing his adamantium claws to Yashida, they were restored at some point in the dystopian version of 2023. It's unknown exactly how he regained them, but it has been presumed that Magneto used his powers to re-coat Wolverine's claws in adamantium.
- In the films, Wolverine's accelerated healing powers are never referred to as a "healing factor".
- Originally, in the first two movies, Wolverine's healing powers (at their peak) and their various benefits were portrayed differently. His healing speed was not fast enough to stop him from bleeding, and the level of his endurance to pain was seemingly lower as he was easily knocked out by being struck with a tree trunk and later shot in the head. Also, after healing, blood was still visible on him, while later films seemingly omitted it.
- Professor X and Wolverine were the only two characters to transfer their consciousnesses into their other bodies. Charles transferred his consciousness into his twin brother's body just before his old one got disintegrated by Jean Grey in the original timeline, while Logan transferred his consciousness into his younger body in the revised timeline.
- Dark Phoenix is the only 20th Century Fox X-Men movie to not feature Wolverine, as Hugh Jackman retired from portraying the character.
- Hugh Jackman suggested in an interview following the release of the second trailer that Logan would take place in a different universe than the revised timeline, similar to how in the original comic, Old Man Logan took place in a separate timeline from Earth 616. However, James Mangold stated that Logan takes place in the revised timeline. Patrick Stewart furthered this in an interview with Comicbook.com, stating "It's not another timeline, it's not another universe. The world has just...moved on, and we've been left behind." Marvel themselves later designated Logan as taking place on Earth-17315 and being non-canonical to the revised timeline proper.
- When Wolverine complains about the leather costumes in X-Men, Cyclops replies with "What would you prefer, yellow spandex?", a reference to Wolverine's costume in the comics, which Wolverine’s other variant named the Worst Wolverine from the MCU would wear.

This suit would appear in Deadpool & Wolverine, whereas, Logan does wear it, just without the cowl. Also, Deadpool notes that it’s the John Byrne brown and tan suit, and says if he fought the Hulk in the suit, Wolverine snkits his claws, when he does Hulk appears on the reflection, mirroring the cover of Incredible Hulk Vol 1 340 from 1962, although Hulk was grey back in that comic, but here Hulk is still his modern green color.
- In an alternate ending to X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Logan is in a bar asking for shots and the bartender asks, "Are you drinking to forget?" Logan responds, "I'm drinking to remember."
- While time traveling, Wolverine never encounters his past self as he simply possesses his body. However, using Wolverine's mind as a bridge, Professor X is able to encounter and communicate with his future self.
- Due to his regenerative powers, Wolverine is the only person among the X-Men capable of time traveling more than a month into the past using Shadowcat's powers. This was originally Professor X's job and as Professor X's 1973 self-points out, Wolverine is "the wrong man for the job" of changing history which Wolverine is well aware of. However, he is simply the only one capable of the job and while he fails to make the changes himself due to being incapacitated, his efforts enable 1973 Professor X to finish the job he started.
- While Professor X and Beast are aware of the original timeline due to Wolverine enlisting their help to change it, Wolverine is the only one who remembers it. However, he apparently possesses no memory of what happened in the new timeline consequently.
